Hello, PA Boy heading back home in a few weeks for my brother's wedding and I was wondering if anyone had any advice on PA Sours? Thanks for the Advice.
Not a ton of bottled sours in PA from my experience. However, if you are in the Harrisburg area, Pizza Boy will fit your bill, plus I think Troegs has some Splinters that are in house only.
Whatever you do, stay away from Free Will Alexander. (although i hear they have some decent sours coming out in the future)
Though I haven't lived there for over a year, I was a Troegs regular for many many years. Do they really have some of the Splinters available for in house consumption? Im certainly not as in the know as I used to be, but this is the first Ive heard of such a thing...would certainly make a detour thru Hershey during my next trip for such a thing! And I 2nd hitting up Pizza Boy, not many places you are gonna get growler fills of tasty sours...cant say enough good things about what Al / Terry have done over the last year. Always my 2nd stop when traveling back home (ya know, after the family).
For American Craft Beer Week they had bottles of Splinter Gold and Splinter Brown available for onsite consumption. I haven't heard if they are still available.
Does any state have an adequate selection of sours other than CA, OR, CO and WI? I know or selection of sours here in VA sucks.
Natty Greene's and Green Man in North Carolina also make excellent sours though they are all special releases and hard to find. Another NC brewery in planning, Haw River Farmhouse Ales, will also offer sours.
There is a small brewery in Tunkhannock, PA called Nimble Hill (it's actually a winery that started brewing beer recently). They just made a pretty decent wild ale called Mysteria 2.0. If you're in north eastern, PA you should be able to find it.
Id put some of the sours coming out of bullfrog up against the best the usa has to offer. In fact the best sour I had that is made in the states is from bullfrog.
