Completely took a pass on it this year after having 2+ 4 packs of infected last year...Glad I didn't get any this year.

An overrated brewery. Their barrel program doesn't hold a candle to that of other Midwestern brewers such as Founders, Bell's, or Goose Island. Just sayin'.

You would think maybe at this point that they themselves would let it age in the bottle for awhile (and then test it) before they release it. They mentioned in the blog that they still have one more batch that they might release - not a good idea if they're gonna bottle it and ship it out immediately if it passes whatever tests they're doing.

Hasn't the infection shown itself fairly quickly, like within 1-2 months? Bottle it and wait 2 months before releasing to avoid another recall.

So we're going to have to treat CW BA beers like DIPA's now? Over two weeks old = drain pour.

"Regular occurrence over there"...? If you are referring to the Bruery, I feel you are uninformed. Sure there was a few instances of some infected barrels that slipped past QC last year, but in comparison to the varieties and volumes of beers that have spent in barrels, their infected rate is quite low IMO. With the credit they are offering for the infected ones that did get out...I don't think you should be hesitant to buy their product.

I based that assertion on a search here on BA in which I discovered White Chocolate, Ebony and Oak and a number of other beers that had been infected. Cacaonut, according to many reviews on here and on Untappd, was widely perceived as infected as well, yet The Bruery (according to what I read in another forum post) suggested it was only tart and not infected. This to me smelled of a brewery seeking to avoid massive recalls where possible by seeking to adjust consumers' expectations rather than acknowledge an infection.

Either way, I've had three beers from them (Autumn Maple, Or Xata, Cacaonut) and only enjoyed the Autumn Maple, which coincidentally was the cheapest by far (as the Cacaonut, Or Xata and the yet-to-be-drinked Oude Tart cost me $60 plus shipping), and thus have decided that even if the beers aren't infected, they aren't that good and certainly not worth $20 a pop.

To return to OP's post, I'm really interested in how brewery's can rectify infections to ensure they don't happen again, and I also wonder how brewery's that do make sours and toy with brett are successful in avoiding infections.

The Bruery offered refunds to people who purchased the infected beers, not sure what you are saying...from my understanding they had a problem with the White Oak being infected, which was the base beer for some of the mentioned infected beers, or so I thought.

Also, when you barrel age beers, there is always the chance of infection because you don't know what could be hiding in the barrels. Yes, the alcohol most likely sterilizes the barrels but there is always that chance, and its a chance you take.

For as much as they barrel age beers, I would say their infection rate is pretty damn good.

Bruery was (perhaps still is) storing their wild ales and barrel aged beers in the same space. They've said they have bought more space to separate the two, but yea. . .
Not at all hard to figure out how the Bruery had multiple infections with this storage system. Which is pretty ballsy to then be releasing all the bottles at $20-30$ each. No idea how CW has had their PM infections.

Peruvian Morning is the only of their barrel aged beers I've ever had issues with.

I have a question for those who are writing CW off, If their grasp on you as a customer is so tenuous that some bad batches of a single seasonal beer they make can drive you away why purchase it in the first place? The way I see it a normal person who genuinely enjoys the beer and looks forward to it each year would be able to cope with stuff like this.

Its not like they are trying to do this do you have any idea how much it costs to brew, package, ship, stock, recall, and refund that many units of beer? Its not like the brewery is run by negligent hoodlums so what does never buying beer from them again accomplish?

It kinda reminds me of when you see a guy get rejected by a girl and they take it really badly except that its only beer. However the butthurt seems to be equal.
