Hey, I’m traveling for work next week to Peterborough. What are the must haves in the area? Is the beer store a good spot? Any other recs?

Peterborough is a bit of a wasteland.

There are three breweries open now, and a fourth that I think might be open. Publican House has been around a while. Middling beer. Smithavens is a lager focused brewery and is ok. Olde Stone is an old brew pub with forgettable beer. None of the three do anything that you’ll be sad to say you missed. Full Beard is, I believe, either open or opening. I think the new brewery in Lindsay is open now if you have a car. Pie Eyed Monk.

The Beer Store is probably not a very good place to look for beer up there. The LCBO might be a bit better, but likely neither will have any of Ontario’s best. You will likely find a lot of crossover craft blonde ales and lagers.

If you are able to make a trip into Toronto, the beer world will open up for you.

Where are you passing through? On your way if driving there are some easy stops off the highway in Durham/Clarington region.

Traveling though New York by the 1000 islands.

What are some decent breweries to look out for in the shops. Really wont be going out of the way for stuff.

    Thanks for the tips.

I’ve heard decent things about Napanee brewing. Should just be a hop off the highway on your way in.

At the LCBO? Selection probably isn’t great. Great Lakes Brewery (not the same as the Cleveland one), Collective Arts, Bench all make some good stuff, and you’ll probably see a few of their offerings. Hard to say really. If you use the Ontario top list here and search the LCBO Peterborough outlets you might find some interesting things in stock.

There are some breweries on your route.

Check put Manantler and Chronicle in Bowmanville.

If you have time 5 Paddles, Town Brewing, and Little Beasts in Whitby.

This brewery map is great. I hope this helps.

If he’s crossing at 1000 Islands, I think he’ll be turning off the 401 for Peterborough before hitting Bowmanville.

That said, as Electros says, that map can be useful.

The problem with beer in Ontario, is that most of the better breweries only sell on site and are not on your route. Those that do sell in the LCBO network don’t always have shelf space at every location. You may end up just having to try what looks interesting when you hit a Peterborough LCBO.

    Cheers.

Chronicle is one exit past the 115 Highway exit (2 mins), Manantler is the exit after that (another 2 mins plus 5 min through town) in Bowmanville, so it isn't to far of a detour. So perhaps a good stop for on the way home.

Also the LCBO in Pereborough usually has a good selection. Check out there Beer Store too.

This maybe too late, but there are a couple of decent bars in Peterborough. St. Veronus is one. My fave though is Ashburnham Ale house. Usually a pretty solid tap list and food has always been good.
