This beer has never been thrown in a barrel for any length of time, has it? All I can scrounge up is Sledgehammer, which was an amped up version of VH. Hoppy Strong Ale, but the malt is what carries this beer. Would love to see what a variation of this in barrels would taste like.
It has been in barrels. A quick google search shows a whiskey barrel version that first showed up in 2012 and was at Big Texas Beer Fest recently.
That's very cool of you, thanks. But I will get a growler next time I see it. It's really just laziness on my part. I have to go to a specific spot and take my growler. Woe is me. lol
I originally did the Whiskey Barrel aged Velvet Hammer, as you can see in my profile pic with Mr. Peticolas back in 2012. It was only a 5L barrel. To be specific I bought the Oak barrel charred but virgin, and aged it with 4.75L of Crown Royale with half a dozen vanilla beans added for 4 months, then we put the Velvet Hammer in and aged the barrel in his walk in for another 3-4 months. It was delicious. He bottled a few bottles, but I took the rest to Lonestar Beverages and shared during a friday tasting. Hope this information helps.
Also pretty sure at Big Texas Beer Festival it was aged on soaked oak chips in a cask, don't think they did an actual barrel but I could be wrong, I wasn't able to go to BTBF.
Yeah I'm pretty sure they don't barrel age anything which is disappointing. Some of their offerings would be great in whiskey or rum barrels.
Back then he wasn't interested because everybody was flocking to throw whatever they could in barrels regardless of what style, even if it wouldnt compliment the beer, but he was interested in trying hammer BA so I ran and grabbed a 5L barrel to test. He enjoyed it, but didnt seem interested in trying a larger batch. Next time I talk to him i'll ask and update.
