You should be calibrating it every day you use it.

Dending on the meter, check it for drift every couple of hours.

Yep. EPA method protocols mandate calibrating every 2 hours... and that is generally for expensive meters, many of which cost more than my brewhouse.

I don't have a pH meter at home. But I use them at work. If and when I get one for brewing, I'll probably calibrate before brew, and then just do a check with the buffers at the end of brew.

Good practice if you log the pH going into the fermenters.

Yeah I really want to get one. I never get a good hot break and I'm wondering if it has to do with the pH. My efficiency is fine. I currently use bru'n water for my water additions and just rely on the number it gives me.

Got a new probe for my stupid Milwakee Martini Ph meter. I just measured Anderson Valleys Gose at 2.9 after calibration at room temp.

So this meter is really starting to piss me off.

I'm going with a Hanna next time.

What does it measure with a known reference? Or do you know that this Gose should have a pH higher than 2.9? (And was it still carbonated, which lowers ph?) I mention this because I suspect a typical Gose pH (or a lot of sours for that matter) might be in the very low 3's.

I believe the carbonation was completely knocked out after about an hour at room temp and multiple swirls. The lowest ph commercial sour beer I've recorded was Almanacs Blackberry Reserve at 3.0. It was very very sour. Bells Oarsmen (Berliner) measured 3.7 and it was just slightly tart. These were all measured when the ph readings from my meter seemed to be accurate. I would imagine that AVB Gose should be measuring somewhere around 3.3 or 3.4 at the lowest.

Ill try out some new calibration solutions next time I put a brew order in but for now I'm just assuming this meter is junk.

A guy in the club went through 3 Hanna Checkers to get one that calibrated on the solutions. Buyer beware.

The meter didn't work right or the solutions were wrong?? The meters didn't work brand new??

The meters were off, he could not calibrate to the solutions.

Re calibrated. De gassed room temp sample of expedition stout measured at 4.4. Now that actually makes sense to me.

    FML.
