I think what I'm saying is the breweries that I drink make at least above average beer to me. The ones that don't are the ones I don't buy. Makes the statistical part work, sort of, in theory.

If it was successful I feel like that would just become like Untappd. At the end of the day, it's the medium.

Yep. I am typically not just buying random beers without talking to the beer person or doing a little bit of research especially with how expensive a 4 or 6 pack of beer can be these days.

I blame grade school grading where 90+% = A, 80%+ is a B, 70% is C, 60% was a D and anything less was failing. Now when people think of the 5 star scale, 3/5 would be a D grade beer and 2.5 would be failing. If the average rater would somehow move away from that paradigm, it would give greater nuance in scoring because there would be a reason to distinguish between a 1 and 2 star beer.

I’ve made this exact argument on here many times. There's too much of a bubble on Untappd. I visit breweries every time I travel, therefore I’ve experienced plenty of lower rated beers. I don’t understand how everyone rates 3.5 as a beer they wouldn’t try again.

Full Frame is tasting decent albeit pretty green right now. Didn’t skimp on the hops.

    So about a 4.75 then?

Have you ever compared BA ratings to Untappd? From what I’ve seen, BA ratings tend to be higher. I also don’t buy into the seemingly convoluted scale that BA uses when compiling an overall rating. I’ve never understood why people think BA ratings are so superior.

That being said, just trust what you like and who you believe in. Talk to friends, shop owners and buy what interests you. There’s plenty of good beer out there that we can all win.

Hyped pastry stouts being the notable exception IMO

So, that still leads me to believe that neither matters that much. Trust what you like and who you believe in.

Or just randomly buy stuff...that’s fun too!

Because people tend to not buy crappy beer when they have an app that lists ratings of all the beers.

When I'm out of town I will look up the breweries in the area and if they are rated like a 3.3 I'm just not going to go. If I went, I'm sure I'd have some 3's to check in.

I definitely agree here, I don't like that there's some kind of weird algorithm that goes into the "top" lists.
I don't think the ratings themselves are, but 1) I trust the people on BA more than the people on Untappd; there are various reasons, but one is that the barrier to entry is so much lower on Untappd, and 2) related to #1, the amount of nuance that can go into a BA rating is way higher than the 150 words (or whatever it is) on Untappd. So even if I were to see a 5/5 and 50 words on BA as being slight greater than, or equal to a 5/5 and 50 words on Untappd, I typically look for the 10,000 word essays on here, for a little better idea of a beer.

But also like you said, "Trust what you like and who you believe in.

    Or just randomly buy stuff"

I hardly look at ratings anymore. I definitely do love the forum aspect of this website though. There are certain people's opinions here I trust even if the score is much worse/much better than what their opinion is. Generalized ratings are useful without a doubt but I like having the opinion's of people I trust more.

In fairness, I think the only time I look at ratings anymore is when I have a split-second decision to make about which of multiple beers to buy from a brewery I'm not familiar with. Like you, if I'm going based off someone else's opinion, it's typically for a beer that was mentioned in one of the threads I visit here.

Full Frame is good. There’s citrus character but this beer may come down to how much you enjoy Amarillo. Lots of grassiness and dankness for a sweet hazy DIPA.

It’s amazing that every beer has either galaxy or Citra on the label. These beers sell out regardless of the hop.
