Phase Three Brewing (2020)

I'm way into this.

 

Fine by me but seems like an odd time of year to roll it out

He’s on Parler in line at The Jewel with a gaiter coming up to his upper lip. He would even beat me out for Bourbon County but he doesn’t trust them with his information.

Popped into my Binny’s (Portage Park) this afternoon to snag some Deth, low and behold I found a couple of 2-packs of Pressed Cinnamon on the shelf, randomly in a different section than P3 normally is, and in front of some other beers. I assume the beer guys did this on purpose (Vav was notorious for doing it at Marcy St). Or maybe it was some shifty neckbeard hopping to hide it and pick it up later. Either way, worked out for me! Assumed I missed that boat since I didn’t make it in last week.

On to the beer. This is my second Pressed since they updated their water profile (first was Coconut on tap at P3). I’m not sure if they adjusted the recipe of these as well to reduce the lactose sweetness they used to have, but both of these have been my favorite to date. Very balanced compared to the in your face adjuncts of early batches. These are just fantastic beers. I still would prefer to have more pronounced coffee, but beggars can’t be choosers.

 

There is no lactose in Pressed.

 

Ah, my bad, for some reason I thought there was.

 

Still some cans of Pressed Cinnamon at BB Binny's if anyone needs it.

I'm not the biggest cinnamon fan. Like maple, I think a little goes a LOOOONG way, and I think cinnamon is the worse offender of the two.

I was reticent to buy this, due to my own cinnamon aversion and the fact that the Pressed series isn't exactly subtle. Sometimes quite the opposite.

I went ahead & pulled the trigger on a 2 pack and was pleasantly surprised. Cinnamon is present, certainly, as is the less-than-perfect Tugboat coffee, but overall it was more balanced than I expected, considering the incendiary ingredients that can overwhelm these beers.

Is it a great beer? In my opinion, no. But it's a good beer, and makes me think that perhaps with the right ingredient list and a halfway decent roaster, there IS a great beer lurking in the shadows of this series.

I’ve never drank Tugboat but do see a lot of unfavorable comments relating to their coffee. What is it about their coffee/brand that’s off putting? (I’m genuinely curious. Not trying to start stuff!!).

 

In my experience, and it’s been awhile since I’ve bought their beans, they have a more burnt profile. Especially compared to Dark Matter or Intelligensia.

 

"Burnt" works...I'd say they taste like dirt. Not "earthy", like the aroma in a field after rainfall, but like when you fall face down & get actual dirt in your mouth.

Eunoia 2 is a blend of imperial stouts aged in bourbon barrels with loads of raw and toasted coconut and saigon cinnamon added.
