Phase Three Brewing | Lake Zurich, IL Vivid Light | 6.25% | 16 oz can Vivid Light is a West Coast IPA showcasing a blend of five classic hops to throw off notes of dank weed, sticky pine, and zesty citrus. This juice is bitter, dry, and lovingly familiar. ...and don't forget to drop this beer a rating and review (click the beer name)!
Classic grapefruit pith and pine resin experience. More palate affecting than others in the WCIPA Box. Tongue and mouth need a refresh after this one.
Although I am early into the box, Vivid Light has been the most upfront so far when it comes to the piney resin and hop bitterness. I am liking this as it brings me back to my early introduction to West Coast IPAs when my taste buds were not calibrated. This is another example of why I am glad I bought the West Coast IPA box!
I really liked this one. Shocker, I know. All hits so far, @Todd 4.17/5 rDev +5% look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.25 Pours a slightly unfiltered rich golden color with a fluffy off white head that lingers, especially as a ring atop the body of the beer. Citrus notes, especially grapefruit, on the nose and a nice resiny pine note as well. The grapefruit is forward on the taste, along with a bit of lemon, but there’s a big dollop of resiny pine that imparts a significant amount of bitterness at the back of the palate and lingers long after you finish each drink. Delicious stuff. The mouthfeel is fairly dry, and this for me is a definite “sit at the bar and drink a couple of pints” WCIPA that I enjoy so much. Really well done by Phase Three.
This one was the biggest surprise for me so far. Favorite one and I'm halfway through the box. Poured a bit on the darker, amber side. It was pine for days. Resin. Grapefruit. Big aroma and big body in a relatively low 6.25% ABV. How did they fit it all in there?
4.17/5 rDev +4.3% look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.25 A: Pours a relatively clear medium amber in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising quickly from the bottom of the glass and moderate golden yellow + bright yellow colored highlights. The beer has a three finger tall creamy sudsy foamy bright white head that slowly reduces to a large patch of medium thick film covering approximately 60% of the surface of the beer surrounded by a large patch of mottled thin film covering the remainder of the surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light to moderate amounts of lacing are observed. S: Moderate to strong aromas of pine/resin + citrus/grapefruit + citrus/grapefruit pith hops over the top of light to moderate aromas of biscuit + pale + grainy malts with a light amount of grainy sweetness. T: Upfront there a re light to moderate flavors of biscuit + pale + grainy malts with a light amount of grainy sweetness. That is followed by moderate to strong flavors of pine/resin + citrus/grapefruit + citrus/grapefruit pith hops which impart a moderate amount of lingering aggressive bitterness. M: Just shy of medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly crisp with a light to moderate amount of dryness in the finish. O: Easy to drink with well hidden alcohol and a pleasantly refreshing crisp + dry mouthfeel. Enjoyable classic West Coast IPA hop profile.
A pleasant drinker. Has some notes that remind me of some of the hazy ipa offerings out there @Thankin_Hank Brief tropical notes in the forward, then quickly takes on a more citrusy profile through the finish. Light resin notes. Biscuity malt supports. Not too shabby.. Cheers!
Phase Three: Vivid Light Appearance (Look) – Golden with a soapy white head. Aroma (Smell) – White wine/grape. Taste – Pine and lemon. Burst of bitterness but it does not linger. Mouthfeel (Feel) - Medium Overall – Excellent. Refreshing but packed with flavor.
This is fabulous. Wish I could try it next to Bombay to determine which is my second favorite in the box (Breakside is first)
