I'm going to be in Philly early October; any advice for good bars/bottle shops? Monk's is on my list. I have checked out phillytapfinder.com (is this a good resource? up to date?). I know there is a ton of stuff in PA that I can't get in Minnesota. Some that I'd like to check out if I can find them include:

    Russian River
    The Alchemist
    Cigar City
    Portsmouth
    Firestone
    Troegs
    Kern River
    Alesmith

I know that Pliny is sometimes on tap; are bottles usually around in any stores? Does Heady Topper ever make it's way there? Citra? Any special releases, events etc. around that time?

    Thanks!

Heady Topper was a one time thing and you probably won't find any. HF Citra/Double Citra are here every once in a while but mostly for events, so check the events page on BA. We only get Pliny on draft. I do not believe we get Portsmouth or Kern River. You should be able to find Cigar City, Firestone, Troegs, and Alesmith just about anywhere. You might have to do some searching for RR. Most places have Damnation, but there are a number of places that get Supplication/Consecration/other-ations at times, and predictably they tend to go fast.

Everything Steeeve said is accurate. HT may come back, but as it stands, it was a one-time deal back in April. I don't know of any events going on in early October at this time, but tapfinder is the best tap listing resource for the city, and they also list some events. Use that and the BA calendar if you're into those things. You should be able to find PtE on tap, but HF really depends on if there's a recent shipment coinciding with your arrival and many places seem to do HF beers only as part of events.

If you know which part of the city you're staying in, we can tell you the best nearby spots.

Beer Heaven on Columbus Blvd has a great bottle selection, but they are a little pricey. The Foodery on 10th and Pine is another good bottle shop.

For Firestone - we've had Abacus, Parabola and DDBA around at shops. They're all pricey (think $20+), but as late as last week I've seen all 3. You can also run into these on tap as well if you're lucky - use PTF for that.

Both locations Lorianneb mentioned would be good spots to check out for those, as well as RR -tion bottles. You can also try Food and Friends as well as the Local 44 bottle shop.

There were two different shipments of Heady Topper to the Philadelphia market. One in April and one in late June.

Really? I can't believe that one fell under the BA blow up radar and that I didn't hear about it at the places I frequent. Do you know which places got it the second time around?

Back during Philly Beer Week, while most folks were crowding Jose Pistoles for a Founders event, we walked down the block and found a can of HT at Good Dog.

at $10 a can Good Dog was robbing people. Meanwhile we got CBS for $5.25 and KBS for $5.50 at Jose. But if you hit KofP or the suburbs of philly check out wegmans and whole foods for a nice beer selection at a fair price.

Iron Hill North Wales had a battle of the IPAs on Saturday. Had a Heady Topper around 12:15, went back around 4:30 for dinner and it was gone.

supposedly it was only a small # of cases that arrived, much smaller than the original wave that hit the city and showed up all over the place. i believe one or two of the bottle shops got a case and it was gone the same day - not sure about the bars.
