Hey everyone, My wife and I are starting to plan a trip to Philly. We were going to go in June, but now it's going to be early September. I have been to Philly once, about 18 years ago, so I have basically no knowledge of the city. The main part of the trip is to see a couple of Phillies games, but being a beer guy, I definitely want to check out some of the great beer places this city has to offer. So my question is, what is a good place to stay to be close (or at least close to public transport) to get to CBP and some of the great beer spots? My wife and I are not picky at all about where we stay, and we are do like saving a buck on longing in order to spend it elsewhere. Also, what would some of the top beer spots be? Places that my non beer loving wife would appreciate are preferred. Thanks everyone! Cheers!
I work at the Doubletree at Broad and Locust and there is a subway entrance in front of the building(Walnut Locust stop). Ocated close to Monk's, Jose Pistolas, Varga, Nodding Head and Farmers Cabinet. There are a lot of other nice hotels in the area and a few cool but extremely expensive bottle shops. Some other places to check out: Memphis Taproom, Devil's Den, Kraftwork, Barcade. Cheers!
Stay close to the Pattison Ave subway station, and you'll be close to everything when it comes to mass transit. The Broad Street Line will put you within a couple of blocks of "most" of the top rated places. But you'll be a $5-$10 cab ride from the rest. You'd better call me!
And for non-beer spots. Old City is chock full of them. You can waste two days at the Constitution Center, Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and the Mint. And they're all within 2 blocks of each other. As far as museums, the Mutter, Art, African American, and even the Franklin Institute aren't to be missed.
Thanks for the info guys. And Aaron, I'll send you a message a week or so before I head out there. Cheers!
Then new Xfinity Live will be open by then right across the street from CBP. Did you get your game tickets yet? Since your coming in Sept, tickets might be hard to come by if the Phils are making a run. Also good choice on coming in Sept. the weather is better June can be really hot and humid here. Corby112 says he works at the Doubletree at Broad and Locust good choice close to everything like he said. And maybe he can get a fellow BA member an employee discount on your stay or some free upgrade would be nice! Sorry to put you on the spot Corby112
What is Xfinity Live? We are going to get our tickets next month after we get our plane ticket. Probably just going to use stub hub, saw quite a few on there. Might have to check out the Doubletree too. Thanks!
Xfinity Live is a huge sports bar across the street from CBP with a mega screen. I don't know what type of tap line up it will have.
What is the Rittenhouse area like? Any breweries worth a visit? Can they be done without a car? Troegs, Victory, etc?
You're not gonna make it to Troegs or Victory without a car, but Yards in really easy to get to, and I hear they give a great tour. I've been in their bar, but never taken the tour. You can walk there from the Spring Garden el stop. A cab from center city would probably only cost you a few bucks, too.
You might be able to hit victory without a car if your riding septa, any sepa people want to comment? Also if you make it it to Troegs let me know and I'll meet you there. Maybe I can get you a tour Thanks again for the tips when I visited crescent city CA area a year ago.
You can take the regional rail from downtown to Downingtown. It takes about an hour, as would the drive, but it is a mile walk from the train station to Victory and it's not like there are cabs in Downingtown. The walk isn't a huge deal, but it needs to be factored in after many beers and the fact that trains are pretty much just once an hour out there if not further apart.
Taking the Broad Street line you can get to Noddinghead's, Monk's and Moriarty's with a couple of blocks of walking.
While waiting for the train, you could pay a visit to Station Taproom: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/22476
If you were going to go anywhere on the regional rail, you'd be better off going to Wayne. You'll be mere steps from Teresa's, which is IMO the best bar in the burbs. However, you'll still be paying city prices there, so your best bet is to stay in the city.
When it gets closer, let me know the dates and I'll volunteer my car (granted I'll be in it) for Victory and Troegs, but we're stopping at Stoudt's cause the food and beer is freaking awesome and it's on the way. I can't promise that my wife won't be bragging on our newborn. First beer is on you though!

Thanks for all the great info everyone, I am looking forward to seeing the Phils @ CBP, but I am also excited about seeing what the beer scene is all about in Philly. I've heard it's great. And I'll definitely give you a heads up Aaron/Wiggum, I'll be out there sometime in early September.
