Going out to Philly for work next week... as a hophead I was wondering what beers I should seek while out there?

Philly, compared to other beer markets in the U.S. is proliferic and ranks right up there. Check BA for the good places to hit in the area...Eulogy, Monks, Victory, Capone's, Teresa's, this is just SCRATCHING the surface on the Philly beer scene. Depends on the beers and styles you prefer and you don't give enough details. (not trying' to be a dick, seriously). Victory Hop Wallop, Hop'solutely, Nugget Nectar, Double Simcoe, Victory Yakima.

Where are you going to be? What's your transportation situation? There are so many places to go that it is hard to pick just a few. Though the brewery scene is not the best in the country, there are some overlooked gems like yards, philadelphia brewing co, sly fox, flying fish, and of course a bunch of brewpubs. I consider troegs and weyerbacher local, but they are a bit of adrive. Distribution is second to none. We get Russian River, Cigar City, HOTD, voodoo, just to name a few. I have also seen an occasional hill farmstead beer on tap.

This is a really good site for finding beer while you are in the city, but it by no means covers all the good places to go.

Haha yea probably should have gave more details but I live in chicago so i have access to 3F, founders, goose island plus our distribution here is pretty good. As far as styles go I'm big on ipa's and double ipa's.. a few of my favorites have to be zombie dust, hopslam, dreadnaught, S.N. torpedo...I'm going to be in a city called King of Prussia (awesome city name btw) with taxi's as my means of transportation so the closer the better.. plus let me know if you know of any craft beer stores or bars in that area. Thanks for the suggestions so far btw seem awesome

If you're going to be in KOP then Capone's is your best and closest bet to find some great beers without having to travel into the city.

Go to Capone's, find Irene and tell her Scott from Alabama said hi. She'll treat you right.

You could head into Wayne and visit Teresa's, too.

I'd definitely suggest Capones if you are looking for IPAs. Matt normally has a very good selection of them on tap. Here are the IPAs as of yesterday:

    ALE SMITH IPA
    SIX POINTS RESIN DOUBLE IPA
DARK HORSE DOUBLE CROOKED TREE DOUBLE IPA
    SOUTHAMPTON BURTON IPA
    PORT BREWING MONGO DOUBLE IPA
    BALLAST POINT BIG EYE IPA
    UINTA HOP NOTCH DOUBLE IPA

If you shoot him an email at [email protected], I'm sure he will let you know what's upcoming(if anything interesting)

Since you are in King of Prussia you are only about 15min away from the best hidden jem in the burbs. The Railroad Street Bar and Grill 36 Railroad Street, Linfield Pa. The owner, Mike, recently added over 38 taps. They carry over a 100 different bottles as well. I just had Avery Mephistopheles Stout on tap. You can check out the beer list at www.beermenus.com and search for Railroad Street. You can't beat the menu. Everything from Alligator bruchetta, great hot wings and a full page of grilled cheese (including my fav the lobster and gouda). You will not be far from Capones or Theresa's either.

As many have pointed out, King of Prussia is a good bit away from center city, so you're better off staying out in the suburbs. Capone's is probably closest.

Here is a map I have made of my favorite beer bars in Philadelphia. Might be helpful. I would agree on TJs Teresa's, or Capone's too!

For that part of town, I would say Capone's for great beer, bottle selections, and food.

It's not far from King of Prussia but with a taxi, I have no idea how much it might cost. On the way to Capone's from the PA Turnpike (Norristown Exit) is Whole Foods in a mall on the right next to the TP exit, they have a nice bottle selection also. My wife and sometimes make the drive from Allentown to viisit Capone's (a good 45 minute drive or more depending on traffic). Enjoy your visit to the area!

I agree with Teresa's, Capones and TJ's. Whole foods in Devon has a small, but decent tap selection and decent bottle prices and good selection of PA beers.
