Over the years I have gotten to know the head brewer of Iron Hill Phoenixville (his name is Matt) very well. He is a very talented brewer IMO.

    Cheers!

It raised my eyebrow that Flying Fish's Red Fish won in the ESB category (since it is labeled as a "West Coast hoppy red ale" and uses Pacific NW hops)

But then I saw the GABF ESB category included two subcategories:

    66 . Extra Special Bitter
    a. Subcategory: American-Style Extra Special Bitter
    b. Subcategory: English-Style Extra Special Bitter

I never thought of American hopped beers as falling into the ESB category.

I recall back in 2010 visiting the Cherry Hill location of Flying Fish the guy giving the tour, he may have been a brewer or at least someone of importance, told us that they don't do GABF because "It's these brewpubs that can make a one off beer that enter. Everything we make we have to be able to sell on the market."

Looks like they've changed their minds.

Looks like they took the strategy of entering a category with a lower number of competition.
