Hey guys, I'm driving up from MD on Saturday to go to the Beer Camp Festival. Afterwards I'd like to hit up some craft beer bars. Any recommendations?

My personal favorites are monks, local 44, Kraftworks, and Varga Bar. Get on the site, pick a hood, and hop around!

It seems that Barcade, Johnny Brenda's, and Karftwork are all about 10 min walking from Penn Treaty Park. Apparently, Sancho Pistola's is a 2 min walk from the park.

This is the Philltapfinder link for the neighborhood near the park (Fishtown):

Have fun. Look both ways when crossing the street. Wear clean underwear.

That's the beauty of Philly....no matter where you are there's bound to be at least 1 or 2 solid beer bars within walking distance.

Something I posted in a past thread:

Philadelphia is a city of neighborhoods. The selection of craft beer is excellent in several of the city’s neighborhoods:

Center City: Monks, Jose Pistolas, Nodding Head, etc.
Old City: Irish-Pol, Khyber Pass, Eulogy, etc
Northern Liberties: Standard Tap, Abbaye, etc.
Fishtown: Kraftwork, Johnny Brendas, Memphis, etc.
University City (West Philly): Local 44, City Tap House, etc
Art Museum Area: The Belgian Café, Bishops Collar, London Grill, Brigids, etc.
South Philly: Devils Den, P.O.P.E., South Philly Tap Room.

And then there are outlying neighborhoods of Manayunk, Chestnut Hill/West Mount Airy, etc.

You would almost have to work hard to not find good beer in Philly.

    Cheers!

P.S. If you are interested in starting a ‘shit storm’, ask: Where is the best place to get a cheesesteak in Philly?

It's also why people review Places on here. Go to Places, PA, Philadelphia, and sort by highest Rating. Scroll past the ones with only a couple ratings until you find a place with a high Rating average and a lot of reviews. Good place to start.

Northern Liberties & Fishtown are walking distance from the park.

The Market-Frankford El would take you right down to Center/Old city, also.

This is pretty much my reaction as well when I see this sort of question. You're talking about a city that has literally hundreds of great beer bars, a number of them world class by anyone's standards. So it's hard to know even where to begin when you see a question like this.

To the OP... my suggestion is for you to first decide what parameters you want to set for yourself. If you're not opposed to drving around a bit, and want to hit some of the top spots in the city, then go with jmdrip's recommendation. On the other hand, if you want to limit the amount of driving you have to do (strongly recommend this), then I would recommend resources like beermenu, beermapping and tapfinder to locate some of the better local options adjacent to the event. You can cross reference some of those spots with the Beer Advocate places directory to see which spots are the most highly regarded on BA.

In response to MikeBurd1128's last question, I know this issue has been raised by a number of folks in the past in various regions (Portland, San Diego, SF, Denver, etc., just to name a few). I can't recall the explanation provided, but I know that in the past Todd and Jason have been resistent to including a permanent "sticky" in various regional forums. However, what you guys could do, and what I recommend, is something like this:

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/visiting-portland-summer-fall-2014-update.195202/

The post is maintained and periodically updated by several BA's from Portland, Oregon. It's a great resource, and is one that is easy to cut and paste as a response whenever you get a question like this. How about someone from the SEPA/Philly area doing something similar?

but you can't edit a post after 15 minutes, right? How is the first post it being continuously updated?

    :-)

In the beginning, the guy who created the post asked for recommendations, as to what most folks felt were the top rated places. After that....

Typically, the post is updated seasonally, at which time additions and substractions are made. The person who created the orginal, simply cut and pastes the old post into the new one, with the new season in the header. That's when substractions and additions are made. So there's rarely any need request moderate assistance to edit the post. So far, I've been asked to make one editing change since the original post was created a couple years back.

I'll be happy to lend a hand with the editing should you need it, but my guess is you won't require any assistance from me. At least not after you create a template (I think a local moderator did help out a couple times with some last minute additions to the first, orginal post).

Even with moderator help to implement that, I'm not so sure it improves the situation much anyway.

Because without that thread being constantly at the top of the sub-forum, it would still have to be searched for, which people aren't doing now.

I'll grant you that this is a potential problem, but why not give it a try?

In the NW forum, this is rarely a problem. Folks coming to the area see the thread and invariably comment on it, or ask about some recommended bar, pub or brewery in the thread. As a result, the post is contantly getting bumped to the top. Granted, the Mid-Atlantic forum is much more active then the NW forum (with a lot more posts and threads), but I don't think it would be that difficult to keep it active (though, certainly I could be wrong about that... only one way to find out).

unfortunately it usually only takes a couple of days for the most recent "visiting Philly" thread to get bumped off the first page, and the cycle starts anew. For example, right now the first page of threads only dates back to yesterday.
