Looking forward to this again as usual. I might try to take it a little easier the first weekend so I'm not completely burnt and out of spending money by Sunday afternoon.

I'm always looking forward to Beer Week. The past two years have been fantastic as I've planned out my week and hit lots of great events. This year, though, we're having our first child like maybe two weeks before this starts so that's going to change things a bit. Still hope to hit a couple of good events but I won't be able to hit all of them like I've been doing.

awww looks like lil' brandon(ok. I totally forget the name of jared and kristy's boy but that might be it.) might have a partner in crime this beer week. to think that'll be his second and he's only, what, 1 1/2 years old? love those guys.
    good luck with the baby!

Yeah, we're hoping. With the way the dates line up, Brandon could be almost exactly a year older than ours since he was born in May. I'm really hoping we'll be able to get ours out to an event or two but it'll really all depend on the timing.

    edit: Oh and thanks!

Are the VIP tickets for Opening Tap and Expo worth it? Have there been worthy one-offs in the past? I'm leaning towards only buying VIP tickets for the Expo.

I plan on checking out The Victoria Freehouse, Devil's Den, Monk's Cafe, and Eulogy Belgian Tavern for sure. What other places have been great in the past? I'm probably thinking about this a little too soon, but whatever. I'm always game for just seeing where the night takes me, but after driving 8 hours I want to make sure I hit some hot spots.

I plan on eating multiple Tommy DiNic's Roast Pork sandwiches too.

Capones is ok but not worth the drive. Food is average at best. Service stinks. Stay downtown, just as good of a selection , better food and no driving.

Kite and key has a good beer list most days and the food is not bad. Tony Lukes has a good sandwich too. Standard tap has really good food and a great local tap list. Kraftwork has a good list and the food is pretty good too, or hit Sketch Burger for food and then Kraftwork. Philly tap finder is a good start. Local 44 is opening a new bar someplace in the center city area too. If you want a great breakfast check out Cafe La Maude on 4th street.

    Enjoy

not sure who you pissed off at Capones, but I find their service to be some of the best in the industry. Sure, most of their bartenders don't know diddly squat about craft beer, but that doesn't mean their service stinks.
Also, their daily food specials are obscene for the most part. Stay off the regular menu.

Sorry. Was speaking of table service, not at the bar.

I find the service at Capone's to be very hit-or-miss. Some days it's spectacular, other days I sit there for 15 minutes with an empty glass. I think the food (namely the pub grub) is pretty good (and very cheap for the most part), though perhaps I'd feel differently if I was sitting down at a table for dinner and not just munching between beers.

Capone's has traditionally had some of the best PBW week events. Since they have so many, the good beers stay on longer (OK, the 5 oz pours help), they do flights and at the end of the week he has an event with all the leftovers too. I love PBW at Capone's.

I'm on call the first weekend (which happens to be my birthday, ugh) and stuck with no chance of taking off until possibly the 7th. I hope there are still a few good events on Friday/Sat/Sunday.

Random tidbits I recently saw on the PBW site:

    - Jim Koch is coming down this year. I think the last time he came down was 2010?
    - Church Brew Works, Troegs, and Devil's Backbone (2012 GABF winners in their respective categories: large brewpub, mid-size brew co. and small brewpub) are releasing a collaboration. Plus, Church Brew Works and Devil's Backbone are pouring some other stuff as well in their Philly debuts.
    - 4 Hands is coming again this year (they debuted here last year)
    - Brewmaster from Brasserie de la Senne will be coming in (they also did this year's PBW Belgian/American collab. beer with Weyerbacher)

Honestly the 2nd weekend is sometimes even better than the beginning since people are tired/broke/hungover/bored at that point. The opening weekend can be ridiculously crowded, especially at center city spots. I'm sure there'll be a few great events to hit up towards the end.

For example, Monk's is tapping a bunch of Tom's collaboration beers on June 9th, including the 'last ever' keg of Monk's Cafe Gueuze, so you can look forward to getting your annual dosage of PBW dude sweat at the back bar.

I play a Guess-the-Smell game as I walk down the hall to the back room of Monk's during Beer Week.

I call it "Cheese or Attendees?"
