I thought I'd throw this one up since it's coming up in a few weeks and there's some good news coming out lately about highlights and debuts and such. Some news/highlights below -

    Area Debuts:

New Belgium - In terms of just brewery size and production volume, this is the biggie as after several years, these guys are finally making their way into the market with production starting out of their new Asheville, NC facility. So far, looks like mostly tap takeovers during the opening weekend in spots like City Tap House (a 26 tapper), Varga Bar, and Strangelove's.

Surly (h/t to PhillyTapFinder on making me aware of this) - This one I'm particularly pumped for as these guys and Three Floyds are my top 2 wishlist breweries for who I wish distributed here. With this one though my guess is it's likely a one-off for PBW. They'll have stuff at POPE on Mon. 6/2 and Iron Abbey on Tues 6/3.

Hardywood Park (h/t to PhillyTapFinder on making me aware of this) - On the other hand, I had heard previously that Hardywood were thinking about starting to push up north into MD, DC, and PA markets so maybe this is a one-off or maybe it's the start of more regular distribution. Not sure, but either way, hoping to try GBS!

New Locals - As for newly opened locals making their first PBW appearances, I can think of Funk Brewing out of Emmaus and Conshocken Brewing out of... well, ya know, Conshocken. I'm probably forgetting a few here but I'm doing this pretty quick. Sorry!

    Some Early Highlights:

I haven't really looked at the second half of PBW yet but these are a few of the highlights I spotted over the first few days -

Tired Hands 2nd Anniversary Party - I don't think I gotta say anything about this one. You all know.

Half Acre/Tired Hands Tap Takeover at Memphis Taproom - Always a good showing at the annual Half Acre event at MT, and one of the rare times to get TH stuff outside of TH at another bar.

Funky Buddha Tap Takeovers - One of the more sought after niche breweries over the last couple of years. Two spots I know of so far are Churchville Inn on Wed. 6/4 and Local 44 on Thurs. 6/5.

Cigar City Tap Takeovers - Pretty much ditto to the above Funky Buddha note. Stops include Resurrection Ale House (6/4), Hulmeville Inn (6/5), Monk's (6/6), Cambridge (6/7), and Garage (6/7).

There's a bunch more I'll sure I'll add as I start to look more at PBW stuff happening after the opening weekend. Enjoy!

Had never heard of Surly (still new to the game in many ways) and I'm excited to try some of their beers!

I think any New Belgium beer would be coming from Colorado as they only recently broke ground on their North Carolina brewery although still cool to see them showing up early.

You've never heard of Surly Darkness even though all you drink are stouts?

There is a good chance that Hardywood will be distributed regularly in Philly. I'm told beginning in October. I briefly chatted with them this weekend in Savor and they could not be more excited. Also, Darkness will be one of the Surly beers in town during PBW.

Great news! I've only had their gingerbread stout and I was pretty impressed. I'm looking forward to trying more of their beers.

I don't know too much about them either. I've had several of their beers at various bottle shares and have always been impressed. Bought some stuff this weekend while down in VA (Singel, Bourbon Grand Cru and Raspberry Stout). Their Gingerbread Stout at Savor was delicious. They also were pouring an IPA that people seemed impressed with, but I did not try it. I will definitely be going to at least one of their events.

Tired Hands tap takeover is a highlight? Why not just go to the source at any time?

I think that the highlight is not having to deal with the hipster staff and crowd of Tired Hands...

it's good for those in the area who maybe can't necessarily trek it to TH so easily (Lower Bucks County/South and Central NJ/the NE/etc).

It isn't a Tired Hands highlight or tap takeover, but a collaboration event. Jean went over to HA and brewed two beers(a hophands/daisy cutter pale ale recipe, and a saison). You might see hophands and one other keg, but this event will focus on the two new beers.

I've been to TH a few times and thoroughly enjoyed the staff. I thought they went out of their way to make us comfortable...very approachable. The crowd was a good mix of folks on each of the occasions I was there.

If there will be Darkness in town, either tap or bottles (probably tap), then that will unquestionably be the best event. I love Surly stuff. If I had to drink one IPA the rest of my life and it was Furious, I'd be ecstatic. Excellent.
