The reason the group who runs Philly Beer Week changed their name to "Philly Loves Beer" was because beer is celebrated all year long in Philly and not just one week (aka 10 days) out of the year.

Now this seems like a self-fulfilling prophecy. They're made their own event irrelevant.

I have never heard of this brewery. Are you personally familiar with Empire beer? Are they worthwhile?

I briefly looked at their beer reviews; their top three most reviewed beers:
    • Wit: 83 (Good)
    • IPA: 84 (Good)
    • Cream Ale: 85 (Very Good)
    Cheers!

Capone's is great, however, Empire beer is just middle-of-the-road beer, imo. Good but not great.

No, never heard of them either. That's why it caught my eye.

I do not know how to frame this question diplomatically so I apologize upfront:

Does anybody know of an event which features beers that are not typically available in the area that have significantly better than average beer? As examples I provided previously in this thread, beers like Hill Farmstead, The Alchemist, Tree House, Trillium,...

    Cheers!

Blazing World is quite possibly the best amber I've ever had. Got a buddy hooking me up with a bottle of the Bourbon Barrel Mexican Hot Chocolate version of Monsters Park, which I'm extremely excited about.

Empire brewing is nothing special. I lived in Syracuse for three years—some of their beers are good, don't get me wrong. Skinny Atlas (read Skaneatles) and the cream ale. But nothing to see here folks, move along.

Wish I could have made the Other Half event at Local 44 today. Oh well. That would have been an excellent one to hit, @JackHorzempa,

I think the closest you'll get is the couple of Modern Times tap takeovers. Really looking forward to those.

I had a few Modern Times beers when I was in San Diego in 2015 attending the National Homebrewers Conference. They do indeed make good beers.

    Thank you for the tip!

    Cheers!

*sigh*... another Philly Beer Week failure. I stopped by Lucky's Last Chance in Manayunk today for their Meet The Brewer event with Unibroue. They had the beers on tap - but no brewer. No freebies, no nothing; and they didn't even tell me it was canceled when I sat down and ordered a Unibroue, I had to figure that out for myself. This is why I don't do PBW events anymore, it's happened too many times.

I had a little bit of free time this weekend and I wanted to see if any of the close by events looked promising... I went on the website via my phone, and everytime i clicked a link to an event, I was brought back to an alternate homepage. One bar, which i know had daily events through their FB page, only had one listed on PBW's website. Very frustrating website experience this year.

I visited Burial when I was in Asheville in 2015, the beers I tried were pretty good. But they must have expanded since then, as it was a real small place.

Matt Capone had a couple Burial beers on tap recently; I drank the Saison that was on tap and I enjoyed it. He also had a number of single cans of Burial for sale in the beer shop; he was asking a lot of money for them.

I am guessing that Matt had these beers since it is now Philly Beer Week?

    Cheers!

P.S. A friend recently sent me a can of Burial Surf Wax IPA. I liked that beer! A short 'review' below:

"This beer has an excellent and complex set of hop aromas/flavors: a combination of citrus, pine resin, and herbal. It was quite intriguing."

That's most likely the case. Burial probably has one of those temporary approval licenses in PA for Beer Week. (kind of like The Alchemist did when they sent beer to PA in like 2012)

the main location is still the same but salt and smoke food truck is permanent now. They also have a second location that they're using strictly as a brew space.

Hanging there has the same feel as the tired hands café but with an outside.
