    Fellow beer lovers,
I live just west of Philly and have a buddy coming into town in a few weeks (quarantining prior to, etc). I’m trying to think of some places I could take him where we can sit outside at safe distance from others and enjoy some delicious brews. I’d be willing to drive roughly an hour each way for such an experience. My main thoughts are Hidden River and Brick Farm Tavern (Troon), as I know the beers are good, and there’s lots of outdoor space. Other thoughts - Free Will (Perkasie), Bottle Bar East, and Human Robot, but I don’t know what the outdoor setups look like. I know La Cabra has outdoor space, but I didn’t think the setup was that great. We like sours, stouts, and IPAs mostly. It would be awesome if there were two good options near each other to make for a little tour. Any thoughts would be super appreciated. Thanks guys!!

I haven't been to Free Will to drink on-site since the warmer weather. But when I was there to pick up my Ralphius order after Thanksgiving, there were a few folks sitting outside at the picnic tables in front of the building. But they had taken in the extra tables they had out in the summer that stretched further down the sidewalk. Not sure if that's changed since the new ban on indoor seating.

Looks like they are still having food trucks on Friday and Saturdays

I'm feeling like Free Will is probably a decent option since I love their sours and stouts and I do know they have a decent amount of space out front.

Which ones? The ones I know are solid are Tonewood, Troon, Icarus (kinda far), ...? I know there are two in Pitman, but neither did much for me, nor did Double Nickel. I've heard good things about Eight & Sand and Three 3's, though I don't know much about them/if they have outdoor.

I just remembered Rebel Hill is also a decent option. I was impressed with my recent trip there, for something I had never heard of.

    Thanks!!

Human Robot has outdoor seating but its not great. Bottle Bar is renovating right now I believe and has no outdoor seating. Frankford Hall has a good outdoor setup and decent beer selection. Standard Tap has the upstairs patio that is semi-enclosed and good beers. International Bar/Johnny Brendas both have semi-enclosed areas with above average beers. William Mulherins too. Fermentory Form has been releasing beers on saturdays and while you wouldnt sit there for long it would be a good beer to grab and go. I think you could do something like Human Robot, Fermentory Form, International bar, Frankford Hall and make a pretty good day of it while staying warm-ish.

Brick Farm Tavern is a good idea its just pretty far away.

Great info. Thanks!! I thought Form had a large-ish back back area from the one time I was there. Bottle Bar, I'm pretty sure, did have a smallish back patio, as well. Glad to know they are renovating, so we'll skip.

How are the beers at Human Robot?

Just a heads up on Human Robot: they began building an outdoor seating area yesterday that should likely be an improvement on their sidewalk setup. Beers are great, lots of options for both fans of classic styles and newer trendy fruit-puree-sours.

Hmmm I am not a fan of the lactosed-to-hell, basically a smoothie beers (a la Imprint) but fair enough. Doesn't sound like Human Robot's outdoor space will be a great option by the time of this visit next week. Appreciate the thoughts.

I should have included Philadelphia brewing co, they have really nice outdoor setup that is heated/covered. Human Robot does good pilsners/lagers etc that are solid but as someone else mentioned there sidewalk area is under construction right now so I have no idea what it will look like when you get there. St Oners and Bottle Bar if you want to pickup Tired Hands cans while in the area.

Interesting. The only Phila Brewing Co beer I have ever been impressed with is the flanders they do for Martha. That does sound like a good setup tho.

Living 5 min from Tired Hands, no need to go into the city to get it. Man, I wish they would open up for outdoor seating, but I take it there's no financial reason for them to...

    Thanks guys!!!

Speaking of, Martha has a great outdoor setup (I believe... make sure you check as this is all day to day), and by all indications they’ve been doing a really great job this year of supporting their employees while also maintaining safety. Just worth shouting them out whenever possible.

Lunar Inn is nearby and is owned by the same group as Martha (also Tiny’s bottle shop is next door), and have had good outdoor options (again... their schedule could change on a dime if it hasn’t already).

Yeah, I love Martha. Didn't know about Lunar and that also sounds enticing. Thanks!!

Am I crazy thinking that Form has a back patio area?

Also, any thoughts on Eight & Sand/Three 3's? That would be a do-able trip.

They haven't been opening that, but they're taking orders at the front door and serving take-away cups for consumption in the alley.

It seems to me that there are logistical reasons for why they do not do this in Ardmore - where can they set things up? The parking lost at the Fermentaria is metered and it is not a dedicated parking lot for Tired Hands. Maybe they could obtain some 'waivers' to place a handful of small tables on the sidewalks outside of the Cafe and Fermentaria? I would think they would need permission from the township to do this.

Two weeks ago I visited 2SP (Aston, PA) for the first time. It was a warm Thursday afternoon and they had a wooden deck outside built in the parking lot. It is an Industrial Park location and the server told me that just built this deck last summer because of the pandemic. She made mention they had a challenging time getting permission from the landlord to set up this outdoor deck and there is a worry that perhaps sometime in 2021 the landlord may make them tear it up.

    Cheers!

    Oh good! I'm not crazy!

Yup. I've had those same thoughts. I was actually wondering if 2SP would be an option here. Never been there and I like their stouts. My sense is their others beers wouldn't do much for me/us.

The day I was there they had a wide selection of Imperial Stouts (some BA) available. I just ordered a small pour (8 ounces) of The Russian and I thought that beer was excellent. I also had a number of other small pour (various lagers) and I also thought they were very good - excellent.

If you are thinking of visiting it would be best to call first to see how they are operating. The day I was there (12/10/20) was the day that Gov. Wolf announced the holiday shutdown orders and our server was quite distraught mentioning that they will now only be open for takeout beer sales.

Hopefully businesses will be able to re-open to 'normal' in a couple of weeks (1/4/21).

    Cheers!

Yeah. The Russian and Baby Bob are both good. The coffee stout w Wawa is decent too.

Also, re: TH, I agree with the point about Ardmore, but I don't even think their beer garden in the city is open, so....

Another place I just thought of is Rebel Hill. I've generally been unimpressed by the Phoenixville scene, but I was there fairly recently and all the beers I had were good.
