So... the GF and I are coming up to play tourist for a couple days this weekend, staying at the Holiday Inn in the Historical District (Arch St.). We're coming up on Friday, and at this point I'm leaning towards heading over to the Eulogy for drinks and dinner that evening. We're going to Morimoto's on Saturday for dinner, but naturally, we want to do a cheesesteak for lunch. Based on previous threads on the topic, I'm leaning towards either John's Roast Pork or Delassandro's for the steak (we aim to play tourist, but know better than to go to Pat's and Geno's, based on previous comments I've seen from the Philly BA community). Sunday we plan to do brunch over at Teresa's Next Door.

We'll have a car, but would prefer to do as little driving as possible until we head back down to Bawlmore on Sunday.

Does this sound like a good plan, or should we try something else (other than the Morimoto reservation, we're completely flexible at this point)? I know Triumph, Bennelux, and the Khyber are all close by as well, but thought the Eulogy would most please the GF's sensibilities. Also, any particularly interesting events going on this weekend we should be aware of? I checked the event calendar, but didn't see anything.

    Thanks!

As another Friday night option my girlfriend and I love Kite & Key and they usually have a decent tap list, food is also pretty good IMO, we like the mussels. Although there are TONS of options, you named a few good other ones - check out phillytapfinder.com and look through some beer lists in your hotel neighborhood. I also really enjoyed Philadelphia Bar & Grill (they have Plead the 5th currently on tap as well as FBS, double trouble, burton baton, FW union jack etc).

Dallessandro's is a great spot for cheesesteaks and if you do head out to the Manayunk area you can always stop in at Manayunk Brew Pub on main street for some beers - Disclaimer: I'm not a huge fan of their beers although the California Dreamin IPA is good. I also live in Manayunk and go there quite often in the summer so that could be a reason for me not being a huge fan. Another not so talked about option for steaks is Steve's on south street, I'm a huge fan but hate South Street haha.

    Morimoto is awesome. Nuff said.

here's my two cents, none of which really answers your questions, but figured I would chime in:
*****'s has the best steaks in town.
John's is the #1 pork sandwich for sure, but Denici's (sp?) at Reading Terminal Market has a fantastic pork sandwich, add provolone and broccole rabe like Adam Richman did (Terminal Market is always worth a walk-through regardless.)
Grey Lodge used to have the #3 steak in town, not sure where they rank these days, but its still yummy as always (plus solid taplists every day.)
Dallesandro's makes a great steak, but personally I prefer across the street at Chubby's, and they have a great pickle/relish bar.
For sandwiches in general, Paesano's (either location) make the best.
    Enjoy your weekend!

John's Roast Pork is only open on weekdays until 3:00pm. I still haven't been because of their hours, but I really, really want to. Try to hit it tomorrow if you're up early enough.

Irish Pol in Olde City has always has a good tap list. No idea how their food is and there's not much to the ambience, but still worth checking out if for no other reason than the list. If you want to venture down to South St., I strongly recommend Brauhaus Schmitz.

"John's Roast Pork is only open on weekdays until 3:00pm"

I knew the closed early (I read 2:30, but either way, we were going to make it an early lunch), but didn't realize they weren't open on Saturday. Unfortunately, we both work tomorrow, so probably won't get up to the city in time to hit John's. Oh well... plenty of other options. We'll just have to hit it some other time.

Thanks for the tip about Irish Pol. Will have to stop by and give them a look.

Also appreciate the tip about Clink's (from guzzle211). Maybe that will make a good substitute.

For the Old City section, you've pretty much covered all the bases. There's also Mac's Tavern, though it's nothing special other than being owned by the guy from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, whom you won't run into. National Mechanics is another good bar to check out (and definitely GF-friendly). Just be warned: Old City gets very crowded on weekend nights.

Irish Pol is great, but not what I'd call GF-friendly. (Below-average food, borderline dive bar.) However, they do have an impressive tap selection and arguably the best beer prices in town.

Since you're in the historical district you're a short walk away from some good spots in Old City.

Kyber and Eulogy are close to each other off of 2nd Street. If you want a good cocktail go to The Continental at 2nd and Market. Triumph is also there too but I would recommend just a flight and then move on.

And of course with a quick SEPTA or Cab ride you can get to Monk's, Misconduct and Noddinghead's which are near City Hall.

    Enjoy your stay!

My GF is accustomed to putting up with some of my eccentricities (and I just LOVE a good dive bar), and really doesn't mind a good dive bar herself. So I'm thinking we'll probably swing by Irish Pol at some point on Friday night (you all have pretty much convinced me that it's a great spot...:-). We won't eat there (am still leaning towards the Eulogy for food), but maybe a drink afte dinner will be just the ticket.

    Thanks guys!

If you're looking for a weekend happening, you'll be near Morgan's Pier (beer garden) which opens officially tomorrow -

There's Bierstube as well, which is just around the corner from Eulogy and Beneluxx and is owned by the same people. German spot that just opened a few months ago. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/28184

John, don't listen to the haters. Pat's and Geno's is a must, no doubt about it. They are an icon for a reason, don't discount that. I prefer Geno's sandwich, but love Pat's hot scud peppers. For the ultimate, do one of each.

I still say you have to get to Monks and from there Nodding Head is close, I'd do that rather than running to Manyunk to get a steak. My preference. And visit the Reading Terminal market for a casual lunch of John's pork, all else is second rate (except maybe Tony Lukes, great pork also) but that's much farther down in South Philly.

Another option is to walk South Street one night and just bar hop. You can grab a Jim's steak which is a real good steak while there for a late night snack.

Whatever you decide to do, bring those pants with the elastic waste band.

I can't tell if you're pulling my leg or not Keith. :-)

You have to be the only person on here that I've heard say anything positive about Pat and Geno's. Also, I've already taken the GF to Monk's (I agree it's a must for anyone who has never been before), and I got the impression she felt that was more than enough for one lifetime. I'm sure we'll wander around on South Street some, and will hit the Italian market as well (it's what tourists do, right? :-). Might even stop by Bella Vista or Hawthorne's during our wanderings.

I would try Khyber, Eulogy, and Philadelphia Bar and Restaurant while in Olde City. Khyber's food is now soooo much better snice the remodel (a bit of a wait to get it but it's good) & beer is top drawer. Eulogy the food is great along with the beer selection and the bartender Dave is awesome. As for Philadelphia Bar and Restaurant (some call Grill) I owe it and the Khyber and Eulogy is what i would concider compition although we all offer something different. I hope you enjoy your stay in Philly no matter where you go.
