I'm actually not joking. People now think its "cool" to put down Geno's and Pat's and say there are better steaks, and there may actually be better ones out there, but there is no denying that they both got their iconic reputation for a reason. Do you really think that they would be that well known, famous and carry their long standing reputations if they served shitty steaks? Uh, no. Go there, the food is iconic and worth every penny. While there, go across the street and grab a good beer at the South Philly Bar and Grill. Now that's A real Philly experience. I'm not joking either.

I like Pat's, but thought Geno's was average at best and they owner was a major dickwad. Just don't wear the jersey of an opposing team whilst in line. Zing!

John, I would throw out one more area, even though you've been given a week's worth of suggestions already. A quick ride up the Broad St Line to Girrard will bring you to Fishtown. If it's a nice day, you Frankford Hall is one of my favorite spots, but I would not go later than 6:00pm or so because it could start to get very crowded. There's also Johnny Breanda's (underrated food and beer) and Barcade there, but I don't if the latter is you or your ladyfriend's bag.

Thanks! Haven't been to any of those places up in Fishtown (Memphis taproom is the only place I know up that way). Not sure if we'll have time to get up that way on this trip (have wanted to go to Johnny Brenda's for some time - Barcade would totally work for me, but yeah, Cynthia not so much), but I'll keep all those places in mind if it turns out we do. This is always a problem whenever we go up to Philly... invariably there just isn't enough time to hit all the places I'd like to visit.

As for Geno's and Pat's, I've never heard that they were bad, just that they're over-rated, are tourist traps, and that there are much better places in town. Not that I'm any sort of cheesesteak connoisseur, but I just figured it would be more fun to check out places that the locals think are great and would recommend.

Well, I will throw in my 2 cents.

It has been a loooong time since I have had a Pat’s or Geno’s cheesesteak so maybe my opinion is not valid but I have never had a good cheese steak from either of those places. The meat at Pat’s was always very tough and the meat at Geno’s was just OK. I am reticent to state this but I have consumed a lot of Pat's and Geno's cheesesteaks in the past.:grimacing:

I have had excellent cheesesteaks at Tony Lukes, Dallesandro's, Chubby's and in the long past at Jim’s on South Street. A place which has OK cheesesteaks in Old City is Campos; I would not necessarily recommend them. I appreciate the ‘shout out’ that InspectorBob made for Sonny’s. I will have to try that place sometime.

I really like the Irish Pol but it is indeed in the ‘dive’ category. My wife doesn’t mind when I drag her there. I have never eaten their but every time I go there I think: I wonder what the pierogis taste like. There is nothing like a good ‘home made’ pierogi!

There is a nice lineup of beers at Truimph brewpub (across the street from Eulogy): Hopapolooza, Cream Ale, Amber Ale, Hefeweizen, Jewish Rye, Biz Journale, Belgian Something Else, Summer Bock. Kellerbier. I am a HUGE fan of their Kellerbier.

If you like good spicy Chinese food then Han Dynasty in Old City is a great place: http://handynasty.net/

Have a great Memorial Day weekend in Philly!

    Cheers!

Thanks! I've never had a bad time in Philly and consider a good time pretty much a given. I see that the Irish Pol is just a short stumble from Eulogy, and is right on our way back to the hotel. So methinks we need to drop in after dinner at the Eulogy, just to top off the evening.

Again, thanks for all the recommendations!

(I haven't had any decent Chinese food since I left the West Coast, so Han Dynasty is very, very tempting. Probably won't have time for it, but it's definitely something I will keep in mind for future reference.)

Just got back from Eulogy and Irish Pol... what a complete shock. Both places were great. GF mentioned as we left Irish Pol... thank God we decided not to drive down to Asheville after all.

I would not take the Broad Street Line (Orange) to Girard and walk across that part of the city to Fishtown, especially at night or after drinking. Market-Frankford line, with free transfer at City Hall, to Girard is definitely a much better way to get there, and closer

Beers are definitely on the more expensive end of the spectrum and my friends who went there yesterday said everything was served in plastic cups and a Hell or High Watermelon Wheat was served over ice (ugh!)

Great advice, Broad and Girard is not Fishtown, it's North Philly and a much higher crime area. From Fishtown, I don't walk up Girard past 6th Street, it just morphs into a different world after that.

Way to rip a guy when he's dead. I always thought Joey Vento was a stand up guy, supported local law enforcemnet and told you what he thought, even if you didn't agree with him.

Yeah, my bad. I don't really ride the train in the city often, and assumed that was a Broad station right by Frankford. I would not recommend that route since there's a walk of over a mile through a not so great neighborhood, but John lives in B-More, so I think he can handle it during the day especially. Certainly no worse than the hood that Alewife is in.

As for Joey "This Is AMERICA: WHEN ORDERING SPEAK ENGLISH" Vento, I'm sure much worse things have been said about him. I don't know if this story about the meat is true, but if so: GROSS!

Unfortunately, for whatever reason, John's Roast Pork was closed today (Memorial Day weekend maybe). So, we ended up heading over to SPTR (where I got the cheesesteak sliders and the GF went for the cheesesteak omlett). Not what I was hoping for, but damn if the kitchen there doesn't turn out some good food (my GF was frankly shocked by how good her omlett was). Anyway, it's been the usual fun time in Philly today, but we'll have to try John's some other time.

We did drive by Pat and Geno's, but that turned out not to be such a great idea either. There was no parking to be had anywhere around there, and both places had huge lines (and this was at 2:00). All things considered, SPTR turned out to be an excellent fall back choice.

Yeah John's started opening on Saturdays in April I think, but I can't comment on why they weren't open if you got there before 3.

As for Joey Vento, dude was a racist, xenophobic jack ass. He comes from a family of murders, drug dealers, and other criminals. He supports police only in the way that Michael Corleone would, for protection...

I really didn't see Joey that way, but maybe you knew him or his family personally. We could debate the relative mertis of making English the official language of this country, which I don't view as racist or xenophobic, but this is a beer website not a political one. I'd just prefer to let the dead rest in peace and guide people to food joints, restaurants, bars, etc based on one's taste or one's experiences at said establishment, not one's politicial views.

    Cheers,

    Derek
