I'm coming into Philly Friday night so I can explore the campus at Temple with my son Saturday as he is considering attending there after graduation. My question is are there any releases next Saturday morning I could check out before I take him to campus. It's a self guided tour so doesn't matter when we make it over to the school. Thanks for any feedback!
No releases that I know of, but Saint Benjamin is fairly close by. Good luck. Be careful, keep your common sense working. I'm sure it's better now, but when I went to Temple from '85 to '89 you had to keep your wits about you, even right on the edge of campus.
Thanks for the tip. I heard there is a big police presence down on campus but was told that it's really in a bad area so I do definitely plan on keep my head on a swivel.
Bar Hygge is a cool little brewpub on Fairmount Ave, north of Center City as you head towards Temple.
I was at Bar Hygge a few weeks ago for their 1st Anniversary event. All of the beers were very good - excellent and the food was very, very good too! Cheers to Bar Hygge! P.S. I even got a chance to chat with Tom Baker (co-owner/brewer) for 15-20 minutes. He is a great guy!!
If you stay through Sunday tired hands has done can releases the last 2 Sundays. If you can't, i would recommend getting some growlers from there. If you don't do that i would highly recommend getting some conshohocken type A IPA from a bottle shop. I think it's the best local beer that you can get canned easily (not at a brewery release). It is a west coast ipa, but very good.
I'll be gone before Sunday but I'll definitely be hitting a bottle shop so I'll look for that. Thanks!
I forgot that neshaminy creek just started distributing the shape of hops to come regularly as well. I would definitely try to pick that up as well.
Always a must when going into Center City Philadelphia is McGuillens Old Ale House. It is the oldest bar in the city with a decent size tap selection. Reasonably prices on food and beers. Right across is Café Bru. It is a very cool German bar with numerous German & Crafts on tap.
While you should always use common sense and just be generally aware of your surroundings Temple is not nearly as bad as it used to be. Honestly though when you are on campus you won't really walk anywhere else. While you definitely could, and I love walking the city I would just uber around to the places people have suggested. Once you get to some of the other places walk around there as there are great groupings of bars. As someone has mentioned previously use phillytapfinder.com but then also check out the neighborhoods tab on the site. Basically I would treat the two as separate items (Temple and beer) just because when it comes to good beer in the city Temple is still kind of isolated. If you are trying to hit up bottle shops there are some great ones in the city but you will pay city prices.
