Since you're staying in Mt Laurel, if you're looking for a nite cap be sure to go to Jay's Elbow Room in Maple Shade on Route 73. Dive bar with an excellent craft beer draft/can list.

Carton is fine but the seed and kane are both closer to Mt Laurel unless you are headed by Carton anyway. Agree on Jay's if you're good with a dive bar. Farm and fisherman nearby has good food and usually a good tap menu. As discussed Tonewood is worth considering as well. Otherwise I agree with the earlier fishtown recs. I could mention other South Philly places but you'll have enough between monks, snj, and fishtown spots honestly.

Since you'll be staying in MtL (I live there), Blue Monkey Tavern Restaurant in Merchantville is well worth a look. If you go to Jay's Taproom... some of the hotels in that immediate area are a tad seedy and can attract a less than favorable crowd. Use your situational awareness.

For stores, Traino's Wine & Spirits, and then Wine Works (Marlton). Martian's Liquor's on Rt. 38W at I-295.

Yeah, I kinda figured that was the vibe there. Just trying to save some money so I have more for beer to bring home

I'll be in Philly next weekend, staying near Center City. I'm wondering if anyone could point out a good shop where I can find cans from Dewey Beer Co (among local treats).

This thread has helped me put together a solid list of options for bars and breweries. Thanks everyone.

I don't know about Dewey Beer specifically, but The Foodery might be your best shot

Mike we get Dewey drops by me, if you ever want some, feel free to shoot me a message. I feel like I probably owe you, as is! Enjoy Philly!

What's the consensus opinion about Monk's these days? Back in the day, a lot of people from the Philly area seemed to have a Love/Hate attitude about the place. The positives about Monk's were obvious (good food, really good taplist, interesting ambiance, fantastic bottle selection), but so were the negatives (often crowded with long waits to get a seat, no sample pours, high prices and often indifferent service).

Haven't been in more than a decade now and was just curious.

Older Philly Beer Scene Residents might have a different perspective than I as I've only been going to Monk's for the past five years are so, but my impression of them is like... 80% positive. They're one of the OG craft beer bars in the country, and worth visiting just for that. They're in a convenient area of the city to get to easily. They often have a stellar tap list, both relative to the city specifically and in terms of prominent bars worldwide. I don't know ownership personally, but have heard decent things for the most part and like that they've been in business for foreeeeever rather than being funded by an upstart.

Locals like to make (warranted) jokes about how inaccurate the bottle list tends to be or how selective they are with bottles they give away (I think the "last PNC" has been given away 10+ times now), but I think it's mostly in good fun. If you go on a weekend, you might have to be okay with just turning around if it's too crowded. But as long as you have this built into your expectations, I love the vibes occasionally. And there's no shortage of good options nearby if you have to turn around.

If you're talking about that Suarez drop, that was a walk in the park. Definitely not a debt in any stretch. But I'll let you know if I can't scratch that Dewey itch in Philly.

Back in the day, I always felt the positives outweighed the negatives, but then I wasn't from Philly. Locals would always point out that most of the Belgian offerings could be found elsewhere in Philly, and for considerably less money (The Bishop's Collar was usually mentioned as an example). Plus, I think it irritated a lot of people that they wouldn't let you try a sample or two before ordering, with the staff taught to state that their kegs were so rare and expensive they couldn't afford to offer samples (other places in town pouring the exact same beers would let you try a sample before committing to a glass). While the criticisms were accurate, the taplist at Monk's was always undeniably outstanding and I just liked the vibe of the place.

Also, only a tourist would try to visit Monk's on a Friday or Saturday night. I would go on Saturday or Sunday afternoons and never had a problem with the crowd.

Anyway, I was just curious as to how the current local beer community views the place these days.

I went there last week. Mussels were good, had what I consider a reasonably priced (36 bucks) 375ml bottle of 3F Framboos and the service was great. It was about 3pm on a weekday- got seats at the bar immediately. I am actually curious what the going rate for a Lambic bottle is around the country. When I say that I thought 36 bucks was reasonably priced that is with Massachusetts in mind. If you can find a bottle of Framboos up here, I reckon it would cost at least that.

John, Monk's is still pretty much the same as it ever was. Some new faces staff-wise, and now Bernadette is in an ownership position in place of Fergie. Fewer beer dinners, but they were still top notch. Tom had seemed to be there less, but so have I.

Well, day 1 (basically a half day with the drive & concert) only found me at Other Half. I tried to go to Monk's, but there was a "rush hour ban" on all street parking and I wasn't feeling like paying $30+ for a lot. I plan on going early tomorrow afternoon to beat the crowds and parking issues. Probably gonna hit up Human Robot after that. Other Half had a nice vibe and pretty good beer, though a lot more lively than the Domino Park location

How'd you enjoy Monk's (etc), if you made it?
