In all fairness I should point out that they were re-inspected this week and passed but still that report was pretty nasty. Won't see me there anytime soon.

Since the link didn't work: Old World Brewery Inspection Report-
    Inspection Comments
This establishment failed to meet minimum standards to qualify for a permit, The following items must be corrected in order to obtain a permit. 1. Noted broken glass panels at the southwest corner of the building in two locations. Replace. 2. Remove the cob webs at the entrance way. 3. Clean the pet hair from the entrance way. 4. Provide coving at the bar in a few locations where it is missing. 5. The walk in cooler is missing coving from the base of the walls in most areas. Provide metal coving inside of the walk in cooler. 6. Clean and remove the clutter from behind the building. All piled up pallets and debris provide harborage to rodents and insects. 7. Clean the space behind the large walk in cooler and the window sills. 8. Flash off the top of the large roll up door on the north side of the building. A large gap exists which allows for insects/flies to enter. 9. Rodent/mouse feces found on the floor and shelving at the storage area used for grains. Remove the product from the shelves and clean and sanitize all shelving and floor areas in this location. 10. The mop sink located outside of the back is not connected to the sewer and drains onto the floor and the sink itself only has cold water. Provide a sewer connection to this sink and provide hot and cold water. Also, secure the sink to be more stable. 11. The hand washing sink at the front by the taps is not connected to the sewer and it drains to the dirt lot on the north side of the building. This sink must connect to the sewer. 12. Dogs are living in the back lot of the building and dog feces was observed outside. This attracts insects and excess flies were noted. Maintaining this area clean of excrement will reduce the fly issues. 13. Noted beverage brewing parts and equipment submerged in liquid inside of buckets that contained caustic and strong chemicals. Obtain white food grade containers for the purpose of cleaning parts/equipment. 14. Some FRP material is coming loose from the southwest corner of the brewing area and needs to be re-attached. Also, smooth the finish on the south door. 15. The three vat sink leaks on the base of one of the basins. Repair. 16. The men’s restroom wall on one side is rough brick. Paint or use FRP to provide a smooth cleanable surface. 17. Noted several missing tiles in the ladies room near the entrance and a rough floor threshold. Repair both areas to be smooth and easily cleanable. R.S. #950 was present at the time of this inspection

Their stuff is horrible, IMO. Waste of your money. Watery, flavorless. Look at reviews here and on RB. Again, another reason to be very, very cautious when someone is promoting "drink local". Four Peaks, yes. Old World, no.

Never heard of these guys, but I just checked out their facebook page... they mention a big new deal with Safeway, new distributors in California, etc.

    Can't be that bad, right?

"support local" movement umbrella. It has shelf space for that reason, and there's enough people buying it at least once. Not sure who, if anyone, is a repeat buyer of their pricey bombers.

    interesting theory.

local = automatic shelf space = a lot of people willing to try it at least once

however what you're essentially saying is it doesn't matter how bad a beer is, how bad their reviews are, how much rodent feces their location has... there are enough beer consumers who blindly support anything billed as 'local' regardless so it's a can't-lose business.

again, it just doesn't add up. there is something missing to the riddle.

there is a lot of competition even in the 'local' category.

Actually not at all. Those large bombers of local beers move slowly, regardless of which local brewery. It's a miracle that they have the shelf space for them in the first place... but they do. Every craft beer enthusiast I've known will almost always try new local stuff at least once, so it's not at all odd to think that this accounts for a slow movement of that product in the heavily promoted "buy local" stuff.

And yes people do buy beer that is mediocre and support those breweries. I think it's absurd to suppose that craft beer drinkers are largely educated, discerning palates who check reviews before buying something. They don't, most of them at least. There's also the large tourism industry six months of the year and people like to try the local stuff, without knowning anything about it.

I've chatted with one of the beer people at Whole Foods in Scottsdale and they have the local section of taps even though they don't sell as well as the other 24 or so. I asked why, and the reply was because of the buy local theme that is so important at WF.

Buying local is one thing if you live in the San Diego area, or similar. But here it amounts to a sort of affirmative action for most of the local breweries.

Sounds like they really took the "farmhouse" appeal a bit too literally.
