Adnams Tally-Ho at the same price as Southwold Bitter is pretty awesome. Good enough beer, great for aging.
Dorothy Goodbody's Wholesome Stout is pretty nice
Gales don't exist so that stuff is limited, worth a try if you've got a lot to spend!
    Halycon
Nethergate is local to me so try that
Loved Old Slug porter on cask, one of the best pints i've had
    Traquair beers are nice

To be honest this is a mostly sound list with a decent bunch of beers
If there was a shop around the corner to me that had them in at these prices I wouldn't complain.
This will probably draw criticism but I think Bluebird is good marching bitter.

Probably the best thing is to say what NOT to get
Boddington's is a beer that is good only in memory and history books
Strongbow is made near me from mouldy potatoes strained through vagrants underwear
Tennent's Lager is good to inspire you to root through garbage cans
The Newcastle speciality brews are a complete waste of space
& Tetley's was only good when it was brewed at Leeds which it isn't now.

Drink boddingtons to see what beer, piss and unsweetened cream mixed up then left to go off tastes like

I drank my share of Boddingtons locally and get what you're saying but....damn me to hell, I have a slight fondness for it. Don't ask me why, I don't know.

The 1977 Good Beer Guide described Boddington's as "exceptionally bitter" and was an iconic local beer.Sadly its reputation led Whitbread to offer it in its pubs, production was scaled up. There wasn't enough of the specific malt available and it was downhill all the way. Just when things couldn't seem to get any worse they added nitro...........

Regarding Tetley's Bitter ,was talking to Julian Grocock of SIBA who has installed it as his house regular bitter about it. He fell in love with it as a student in Leeds and regards the Wolverhampton brewed version as being at least as good as when it came from Leeds.

    Co-signed. Jacobite Ale is excellent.

Thornbridge- Halcyon (if reasonably fresh) and Saint Petersburg are both definitely worth checking out.

I see they also have Kipling which used to be excellent but has been a little variable lately imo. Had one a few months ago that didn't taste remotely of Nelson.

Am I right in assuming the OP is thinking about the more traditional British beers available? It seems pointless for someone living in a place immersed in American beer to suggest American-influenced British beer!

    Pointless?

A good beer is a good beer wherever it is brewed, sold or drunk !!!

Yes, my number one goal but I also agree with Ruds.

But there’s little to be gained drinking a good beer that‘s come across the Atlantic, if you can get a very similar one fresher locally.

I think Marquis’ objection is unfounded though. I’m not sure there is much on the list that is similar to anything made in America. Even British “American IPAs” tend to be paler, weaker, and bitterer than the real thing.

I was about to say that... I can't see any American style beers that have been suggested except perhaps Halycon which as Ruds pointed out should just be taken as a good beer in its own right.

    A. Le Coq imperial stout is probably the best stout I've had from the UK. Absolutely stellar stuff in terms of balance with just the right amount of brett in there. Very atypical for what's usually done therebouts.
