I joined pretty recently and I've noticed that there are beer pictures missing all over the place. I have a lot of different kinds of beer so I could certainly help out. I've uploaded beer pictures 150X300 (less than 20KB), they are accepted for approval and it says "Picture being approved".

However, some are approved and some are not, but I can't find any advice anywhere, in forums or FAQ, on what the beer advocate would like to see in a beer picture. That it is the correct beer is a given. However, it seems like including a glass with the beer in it next to the bottle (in good light) is not what the beer advocate want. If the picture is not approved you don't get an email telling you why.

Now I am wondering, does anyone know more specifically what the beer advocate is expecting to see in a beer picture?

On the picture upload page, look at the right column. There are different instructions for Places and Beers, but here is the text for beers:

    Rules & Tips
Max file size is 20.48 KB and be exactly 150 x 300 pixels .

Image must be in the image/jpeg file format (.jpg).

Images that are not to spec may be rejected.

Bottles, cans, labels, tap handles only. No general brewery logos. No shots of just beer in glassware.

centered and cropped (not tilted, contain empty space or cut-off)

bright images (without glare and not dark, tinted or grainy)

no glassware, as it tends to be the wrong type or take focus away from the bottle.

vessels must be on clean, neutral backgrounds; no price tags, too

DO NOT UPLOAD copyrighted images or images from other websites.

Set your image resolution to 72dpi resolution.

Try sharpening your image if it looks dull or blurry.

Full images please. No borders/whitespace to fill the size requirements.

Make sure images aren't too "light" or "washed-out" looking.

Images should be optimized/saved for web.

OK Thank you. I did not see that right hand column because I needed to scroll down to see it and I did not expect anything down there in the corner. Yeah "no glassware" rule tripped me up. You can't put a glass with the beer next to the bottle.

Yes, you should take a picture of the bottle/can before you open it.

    Why is this necessary?

I thought I remember that was originally stated as a standard, which I agreed makes for better pictures of bottles. Although I guess it isn't in the instructions anymore.
