Ever have it fresh (< 1 month old)?

It’s actually a fairly hoppy beer.

And I’d pose the same question to you!

This is the greatest post in the history of Beer Advocate.

Got some Pilsner Urquell about 3 months old today.

Don’t believe I’ve ever had it that fresh, the situation here is getting much worse in this dept., not only for PU but time sensitive beers in general. I’m just supposing the glut of beers and new breweries in the culprit here, just a guess.

Haha yes I was drinking. I still enjoy your post, it was very informative.

My experience is that Czech and German styles that used decoction mashing have more depth to their malt profiles.

I think they were slightly skunked though...six pack of bottles, no clue how long they were in the fridge. I'll have to do some more "testing" today.

I almost grabbed the cans too, oh well.

I hear what you're saying but I have noticed a drop off in flavor by 6 months in some of the German imports. My father in law bought me a case of Hofbräu Oktoberfest this past September. Going off memory here... I think the bottle date was sometime around June. The bottles tasted great in Sept. It took me several months to get through the case and by Dec/Jan it was still drinkable but tasted noticeably different. Since that experience, I definitely call bullshit on the one year best before dates with German imports.

I had a Jever that was in date and close to their 15 month old date, it tasted like it too. There’s just no way anyone can convince me any 6 month old beer is equal to one 30 days old. There’s no date where it just goes bad obviously, but head to head fresh would stand out.

I found Hardywood's more like a decent AAL. Haven't had DC Brau, Manor Hill's I thought was very solid I thought and I got that one only 2 weeks after canned which the uber-freshness may have helped alot. Pilsner's are equal to IPA's in needing to be fresh to be most enjoyable, otherwise they become bland and AAL like if old.

Put a pilsner urquell next to a Budweiser and I think people will see the difference. Sorry for the late bump guys.

Sometimes I get a pilsner craving, and it just has to happen. Hopefully it occurs when the liquor stores are still open. Last time it happened I came home with 3 different six packs

Definitely one of the greatly under appreciated breweries in the country. I havent had a bad beer from them

I’m seeing a serious upturn in the amount of Pils and craft Lagers. I was at the beer store yesterday, and the manager was showing me all the new and local beers on the shelf. The problem is twofold, unknown breweries and imo pretty steep prices, the local beers in most cases exceed the larger regional and national brewers. Mason Jar Hoppy Lager is a hit, American take on a Pils using German malts and Mosaic hops, all this brewery does is lagers. So there’s not more lagers popping up because there isn’t interest, I’m seeing more of these than Brut Ipas and NEIPAS. Looks like a bit of a market shift here.

Dale, I was going to ask you that question. Do the beers you are now seeing seasonal lagers or are they year-round product?

As you know Pilsners are year-round products in SEPA.

    Cheers!

    I thought the same thing.

Let's see, here's some that I've picked up recently.

Sierra Nevada Summerfest (Czech Pils) - Summer Seasonal

Proclamation Flummox (German Pils) - A new beer, I don't think it's year round, just a random beer they decided to brew

Jack's Abby Sunny Ridge (German Pils) - Summer Seasonal

Einbecker Maibock - I don't know if this is available year round, but Maibocks are typically seasonal

Jack's Abby Maibock Hurts Like Helles - Seasonal (not their spring or summer one, just brewed in the spring each year)

Schilling Herkules (Kolsch) - I think this is just a new beer by them, like Flummox from Proclamation

Berkshire Busker (Czech Pils) - Summer Seasonal

That's all I can remember off the top of my head. But yes, for the most part it looks like it might be a seasonal thing.

I hate that I can't find a good fresh pilsner in NC, ever.
