so I've been brewing more lager beers with marris or best ale base malt. Now I'm going to buy a sack of pilsner malt and would like to know if any of you brewers have a preferred pilsner malt.

The few times i remember it coming up in interviews with professional brewers, they mention Weyermann pilsner malt. My local professional brewer has said the same thing. On his scale the slight increase in cost is worth it. I used to use it exclusively now that my brewing has picked up, I only use it when I can get a sack from my lube or brewery. I've had to use Avangard and most recently bestpilz and I like both, but prefer flavor of weyermann. Avangard gave me 3-5% efficiency increase and bestpilz is same as weyermann efficiency.

I like thay weyerman barque pilsner malt for my lagers, or weyerman and castle for regular pils in my pale ales.

I mostly use Wyermann and have used Avangard a couple times. You will not go wrong with either one. Take care.

Seconded Weyermann Barke and then Weyermann floor malted another great option.

Can't go wrong with Weyermann. Really anything other than Briess and you're good.

I used to use Weyermann but switched to Avangaard a few years ago. I've never tasted two beers made with each side by side so I won't state a preference. Both are good. The price of Avangard is great, usually $55 a sack at my lhbs.

Hey guys, you do not buy USA produced malts?. I prefer to buy argentinian malts like from Maltear or Cargill instead of Weyermann or Castle Malting to defend national work besides they are less pricely.I know they could be a bit inferior to the imported ones but I like the idea to let them improve their products.Malteurop produces malts in USA , are they not good?

I exclusively use Weyermann Barke malts. Though I did just work with a local Maltster to spec and custom malt me some pilsner malt. Results are not in yet.

I have used different Pilsner Malts depending on the beer style and I have enjoyed all of them:

    · Castle

    · Best

    · Weyermann

    · Rahr Premium Pilsner

    · Kolsch Malt

    · Etc.

    Cheers!

where are you getting your grains? You able to get sacks added on at Foleys? HB shop in Ludlow I'm sure could get you several different kinds...we've done group buys through him and through country malt

I use US malts. Its just that I find a lot of the stuff Briess makes to be a little bland, especially their base malts. Pilot Malt House is a local Michigan company. I use them when I can.

Is it possible to figure if one beer has been brewed using Briess or Weyemann malt?

I use NA Pale Ale Malt a lot (Great Western mostly), but when I'm brewing something with Pilsner I usually go with any continental brand...but maybe I should see how @JackHorzempa likes the Rahr Premium Pilsner. I tried the Briess Pilsner several years ago and was not impressed. I've also used a locally malted 2 row that was ~1.5 L..

I tend to not use a lot of specialty grains and have convinced myself that the base malt now is relatively more important than it used to be.

So my lady friends works in marketing at a local (mainly online) retail store...basically they're rule of thumb is that if LL Bean is doing something, then they should be doing something very similar.

So to bring it back to this conversation...Firestone Walker uses Weyermann Pils...I'm pretty inclined to think that they've done some serious due diligence to come to that decision.

I am a huge fan of the Weyermann floor malted pils and will opt for that if it's readily available.
