I know traveling abroad can be expensive but it is so worth it. I am lucky enough to have friends in Germany that let me crash on their couch for a few weeks. All that aside, exploring another countries beer culture, brewing techniques, breweries and bars is an experience unto itself.

As several others pointed out, Prima Pils from Victory is very nice.

“I am honestly shocked at how few people on here travel abroad.” Permit me to suggest an answer: money!?!

It is not cheap for a family of four to travel to Europe and spend a week in a European country. With the exception of a few countries (e.g., Spain, Portugal, etc.) a trip to Europe is not inexpensive. Add in that lots of folks in the US only get two weeks of vacation and a trip to Europe is rather onerous.

    Cheers!

it also isn't cheap when you are paying for scalped darklord day tickets, a plane ride, and a hotel which some people do.

Have you had Stiegl in cans here in the US? I thought it was good, however I haven't been able to figure out how the can is dated yet.

Yeah, I don’t do that either but domestic travel is waaaaay cheaper than traveling to Europe. A hotel in Indiana is a ‘drop in the bucket’ compared to a hotel in Germany.

    Cheers!

i have had stiegl in cans in the us and in austria. The beer that they can is Goldbraeu which is a good maerzen, not a pils.

combine that with them probably being in the reserve societies, mug clubs, spending huge amounts of money on trading, going to other events, raft beer is a rather expensive hobby, if you held off and saved a bit of money you could easily do a trip abroad if you are a beer nerd.

True what you say about us older, married folks (esp. those of us with kids). I was talking more to the young'ns, actually.

See, that's just not true. I stayed in the Munich Marriott (granted not the lap of luxury...) last summer -- in the middle of the high season -- for US$65 a night. Couple that with a breakfast of fresh rolls and coffee/tea at the corner bakery for me and my family for under US$6 (for all of us...compare that to Starbucks), followed by a self-serve lunch of roasted chicken and liters of Augustiner from the wooden keg for around $10 per person and you're not doing too bad.

It depends on the hotel, just like in the US. Stayed at Sezial for 55 Euro a night, breakfast included. So that was 55*1.35=~75 US Dollars for 2. German breakfasts are more than you get in the typical US motel.

Stumbling up the stairs after that last pint half liter of smoked beer for around 2.60 Euros was worth a lot too!

Indeed. And I was only quoting prices in Munich. Bamberg is almost 1/2 the price of Munich for everything from breakfast to beers. Not to mention the Czech Republic, where things are up to 1/10 the price.

    Jeff,

If you don’t mind me asking, what was your airfare?

    Cheers!

This label is exactly what the can said, is this still the same beer you're talking about? It didn't say Goldbraeu.

It was ~29 Euros IIRC. 5 adults and a dog could travel all day in Bayern. 4 adults and 2 children, and so on. We went from Bamberg to Munich, checked into the hotel there, and the wife said - "It is only 1 PM, and this thing is good all day to anywhere in Bavaria". We hopped on the BOB train to Tegersee. Great stting to drink some biers.

    Kostenloss. Used miles for mine.
The wifes was about $600. Those will go up to >$900 to over 1000 as the weather improves. Shoulder season is the cheapest.

Edit - the cost for the room at Spezial was for one bed, if you have family that makes it more expensive, and I don't think they have any large rooms.

Yeah but if you look on either the side or bottom of the can (can't remember which) or the plastic over the 4 pack it says goldbraeu.

And beeradvocate still lists Goldbraeu as a Munich Helles, not a Marzen. Is this also incorrect? I'm not being sarcastic either, I'm legitimately asking.
