I agree, this is crappy on whoever is doing it, but if a store 'disobeys' the distributor, the distributor can try to cut off future special releases from the store.

I doubt Favorite would be asking stores to do this....

And confirmed by Favorite that they have never done this to stores and would never partake in that. So, if a store says they are forced to, they are telling you a lie.

Definitely was not Sam... but the guy said he was just an employee following directions. I haven't had the chance yet to talk with Sam... but want to share personally with him why I won't shop there anymore. I'm disappointed... as I've always found him engaging and, seemingly, customer-centric.

It most definitely happened... and most definitely wasn't Sam. I went in the next morning to talk with him but he wasn't there. Seen a few Tweets from him on the road... so knew he was out of town... but wasn't sure when he is getting/got back.

While they may not do this outright, Favorite Brands does indeed do this to an extent, as does any distributor. They will allocate more cases of limited release stuff to their better accounts. If a retailer can push a few extra cases of standard shelf stuff, they will definitely get an increased allocation of the next new release.

Rewarding good accounts (or customers on a store level) ≠ out and out requiring purchase of a "standard" item to get a limited one

Big difference there forcing them to sell a bottle with another bottle.

And the person said that the store said he was told by the distributor to do this - I talked to the distributor and they do not practice this (as well as a store who uses them and he has never had Favorite try this).

So, it sounds like the store was trying to blame it on Favorite for something the store does.

Two different store owners told me that the distributor said they had to buy reg Prairies releases in order to acquire limited stuff. And the only time I've ever been told something like that was inquiring about Prairie. Kind of strange IMO.

Not that I really care that much anyway...but yeah.

You seem to like the shop and Sam but are willing to drop them for one mistake when you knew Sam was on the road?

Most distributors do this, think about it. Why would you give limited release stuff to a shop or bar who hardly sells your regular product? You don't see Bars who don't ever have founders taps getting a keg of KBS all of a sudden. Business 101, take care of who takes care of you. As far as the forcing product to buy something else limited I don't know if there is any law against it, not the smartest practice though.

No one has argued against businesses getting larger allocations for purchasing more product from a certain brewery. But forcing someone to purchase product as a prerequisite to purchase another is called inducement. And it is illegal.

Edit: And to clarify the distinction (because it's a bit of a gray area), inducement is requiring someone to make that transaction at the same time, where the former does not occur at the same time.

Nobody is arguing this, it is the forced purchase of something else that is being brought up as wrong/illegal

I agree..don't jump ship on east 1st cuz of one bad experience..especially with no Sam there. At least talk to him first before concluding that you won't shop there again
