I thought about it, but I'm from Atlanta, for anyone engaged enough to know that I didn't want to seem disingenuous...

That said, yinz are all invited, we'd be happy to have ya dahn here on Thursday!

So they're not anything that makes an ipa great? Not something I want to drink.

    Is there a dislike button?

The hops are balanced in a way that one flavor profile does not dominate the other while still providing all those flavors. Like I said before, it reminds me a lot of Flower Power.

This would have been a good thing 5+ years ago. Flower Power has since gone in the shitter.

Unnatural love isn't a west coast IPA there isn't going to be pine in it or grapefruit or tons of bitterness. I've never had Flower Power so I don't know if thats a good comparrison or not. I'd compare it to the newer late hopped East Coast "Vermont Style" IPA's that the Alchemist, Hill Farmstead, TreeHouse and Tired Hands make. They have a specific style that involves mostly late hops. Resulting in a very Juicy easy to drink hoppy beer. The Galaxy, Nelson, and Montueka mix is great if you enjoy Juicy tropical fruit/Citrus flavored IPA's. If not then stick to every West Coast IPA made before 2012. Bottom line it is a great ipa that people seemed to love, including me.

    Never had Flower Power?! :grimacing:

It's not life-altering but it's a really good beer. It does fall off quickly though.

Back on topic, I think I am going to have to venture down to Brew Gentleman this weekend and try this Galaxy DIPA. I do like Galaxy hops but I am skeptical of the chipotle addition.

EDIT: I'll be down on Saturday (assuming it's still not kicked). If anyone is going then, let me know.

Just a heads up, we will only have the DIPA on tap Thursday, we are making our pilot series beers Thursday night only releases so we can keep them on longer and allow those interested a couple iterations to come try it if they miss a night.

As for beer releases this weekend, we will be pouring our "Young" barleywine (we're doing a pre-release with one keg for comparison with the cellared/barrel aged version to be released sometime this fall/winter) starting Friday night.

Saturday we will be releasing the Apple Pie beer, this was a Pro-Am collab we did with an award winning homebrewer and friend of mine from Atlanta. English mild brown base with cider from Soergel's, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice for spicing.

We are working to put together a better system to communicate our weekly tap list, new releases, food and events, we're starting with a weekly blog post called "This Week at The Brew Gentlemen" which will be linked to on twitter and facebook. We will see how this goes and allow it to grow/change organically as we receive feedback from our customers. We're also redesigning our website to have a real time tap list and other such information, it will take a few weeks to have all of this up and running but it's all around the corner.

We have several belgian ales maturing in the cellar right now, soon to be released is the Root Vegetable Saison, and once they fully mature we will release our Tripel, Quad, and Weizenbock (probably around november/october). I have a few Abbey style beers on the schedule for release sometime later in the winter, and more to come as ideas take shape.

I apologize if this is too much information for this thread, I don't mean to butt in and advertise for the taproom. I want to improve our information flow regarding interesting beer releases because we've done a poor job up until now. I hope to see some of you this week/weekend and welcome any advice/criticism, if you want to talk to me directly I'll be the sweaty guy in muck boots and jeans.

P.S. if there are certain beers, especially in the malt forward / belgian category, that you would like to see coming out of PGH, I'll welcome suggestions. I am not decided on our production schedule beyond August right now so there's plenty of room to add stuff into the mix.

malt forward: RISs, barleywines, old ales, smoked porters, wee heavies...all preferably barrel-aged
belgian: flanders, gueuze, lambics (or American takes on these...aka...American Wild Ales)

Just to be clear, when you say "release", you mean "tap" correct?

I second the flanders, gueuze and lambics.

I have an RIS and a smoked porter on the agenda, the scotch ale will probably come in the form of a winter warmer and the barleywine is already in bourbon/brandy barrels

right now I'm playing around with a few hot side sours, we're releasing a Gose next week, a flanders-esque trappist style beer is also on the pilot agenda. As far as the gueze/lambic (s) are concerned, it will be a minimum of 3 years before we could release one if we started today, plus we need a separate cellaring facility where I can monitor the sour fermentations without contaminating the brewery.

I am working through a few barrels right now and my current plan is to get the first two generations through and then propagate some brett and other bugs into the third generation for aging and to more officially start our "sour" program. We are working on some ideas to generate the capital required to make some of these things a reality with a concrete timeline, but as I do not like to half ass things like a sour program I will not push us to start anything prematurely and risk hurting our long term plans.

"Patience is the sixth ingredient in beer", these are all things we have planned in due time, but it will take some time, money and support from folks like you to make that stuff happen. Until then I hope you will enjoy the journey with us, and we can all look forward to the PGH beer future.

Most likely the majority of our releases will be taproom draft yes, but, we do have plans to do special bottle releases, cask events, and all that fun stuff in the future.

On a side note, those who can offer their assistance on bottling days are likely to go home with a parting gift...

Can you elaborate on this? Sounds interesting.

And also, do you fill 32 oz growlers? If yes, of all releases?

One of the brewers I used to work for had a huge passion for belgian dark ales, very few could stricly be categorized as such but things that were stout/wee heavy/rauch type beers with a big bite and belgian yeast were his specialty. In the sam vein and in order to have some fun with hot side souring, I want to try a beer that is something between like a dubbel malt base, potentially with some smoked malt, hot side soured with a natural lacto culture and fermented with a trappist yeast strain to add the complexity needed to really round out the beer. Its an experiment so you will have to be the judge of its success.

Yes, we do fill 32 oz growlers, No, not for all brands, pilot series is strictly taproom only but we're still figuring a lot of these things out and letting it develop organically.

We will eventually offer our own 32 oz growlers as well, unfortunately the boston rounds have been exploding and have been discontinued by our glass supplier. We're actively pursuing other options but for now we will fill what you bring.

So much for me going on Saturday then...

I live close enough. If you post something here, I'd gladly help bottle.

This doesn't have anything to do with Pittsburgh are breweries, but seeing as how there really isn't an official Pittsburgh thread (maybe I'll create one later), and that this place gets the most traffic, I'm going to post this here.

Has anyone seen Jai Alai in Pittsburgh (or somewhere close outside of PA like Vintage Estate)? Looking to score some in decent quantity for a camping trip here in a month. I know that Buddy's Brews on Carson Street has gotten it, but I haven't seen it on their facebook page in a while and was wondering if other places get it.

    Thanks.

seen it at House of 1000 Beers. But that is obviously not a good method for getting a bunch of it

CCB isn't distributed in Ohio (and I am quite certain I didn't see it at V.E. the last time I was there). The closest place I have seen it in large quantities was in Virginia, which is not close at all.

When I go back to Atlanta that beer is usually as available as budweiser, I'd be happy to ship back a case next time I'm there at the end of the month.
