I'll be in Pittsburgh on business the first week of June and am looking for recommendations of places with good food and better tap lists. Will have a colleague with me so food is a major component (no crappy bar food). I'm staying on the South side so recommendations around Carson Street are a definite plus!

Anyone with sway with EE will earn my undying love and affection if you can convince them to hold off on releasing Gratitude till that week too...

Fathead's has an awesome taplist, probably the best in the city. Foodwise, they definitely fall into the "bar food" category, but it's like bar food on steroids with some really awesome, tasty options.

Piper's has good food (British Isles-inspired), with a good tap list, four casks, & an awesome Scotch menu. And it's close to Fathead's. These two are pretty much standbys, & most other places will have some variation on pub grub. Any other places with better food I'm not thinking of, folks?

And as far as Gratitude, did you happen to catch the other thread that was started on it in the Mid-Atlantic forum? I don't think you have to worry about it being released before you get here.

I love Fathead's food. It's "featured on Food Network" good. But it is still "greasy bar food", just done exceptionally well... if OP isn't in to that sort of thing, just FYI.

Any of the "Sharp Edge" locations might provide a bit of a classier, more upscale menu options... and real nice selection for craft beer, but these are the worst prices you will find in WPA (for beer).

I have heard that "Meat and Potatoes" downtown provides up-scale dinner options and a half-decent craft beer menu, FYI, if your #1 priority is food and a good beer is secondary, this might be a good option. I personally haven't made it there yet, but I've heard good things.

Headkeepers does a nice job with a unique food menu and a real nice beer list (particularly bottles). It's way out in Greensburgh, though, which might be on your way into the city if you're coming in from the East on the Turnpike, but otherwise will take you pretty far out of your way from downtown.

I would add The Library to that list of good food and decent tap list on the Southside. I would rank it third behind Pipers and Fatheads respectivley. With that said it seems more and more places around town that have good food keep a few decent options of craft beer on tap. Now these are not offerings that are going to blow you away, but if food is the higher priority then you can usually find something "average" of "subpar" to quench your thirst.

Thanks for all the advice! I'll definitely hit at least one or two of these places that week.

Once again, thanks BAs for the great advice! It was a solid trip and I'll most certainly be back next time business brings me this way!

FatHeads the first night, Nakama the second, and Pittsburgh Steak Co. the final night. Had a bunch of beer that I can't find in KS/MO, and ended up taking home a suitcase of bottles that weighed in at 49.0 lbs. All in all, a pretty successful trip.
