Hey folks. Headed to Pittsburgh next weekend and am looking for some places to hit up for food and beer. Who's got the best lists/atmosphere/food? Also I am wondering the best way to navigate buying beer without having to buy cases in PA. Thanks!
are you going to be in downtown area or suburbs of Pittsburgh. But none the less you have to go to Fat Heads in the South Side.
I'll be staying downtown but don't mind cabbing it. I'm from Cleveland so I'm aware of fatheads. What about buying beer? I don't really understand the whole six pack carry out thing.
You can buy a six pack or individual bottles to go from a bar or restaurant (check out Fathead's or Carson St. Deli on the South Side) or a few grocery stores (none really close to where you're staying). You can buy cases from a "distributor" (such a Brews on Carson on South Side).
What are you looking for exactly? Stuff you can't get back home or stuff you want to drink while you are here. And I think you can take out more then a six pack each.
At a "bottleshop", one person can purchase up to 192 oz. (sixteen 12 oz. bottles) at a time, walk out the door with them, drop them off at your car, come back in & repeat.
The Giant Eagle Market District in Robinson (about 1/2 way between the airport and Pittsburgh- just off of 376) has a pretty good selection, decent prices, and you don't have to buy a case. Some other places to go for good beer: The South Side/Carson St.- Fatheads, Pipers Pub, Smokin Joes (all within like 2 blocks of one another) and the Library North Side by the casino and stadiums- Rivertowne Between the airport and Pittsburgh- Bocktown, Mad Mex, the Sharp Edge, Giant Eagle Market District 20 min or so north of Pittsburgh- 1 for the road (a nice bottleshop in Wexford with a really good selection), Poor Richards Wexford Alehouse East Suburbs- Rivertowne Pourhouse (awesome brewpub) Strip District/Oakland- Church Brew Works, East End Brewery (check for hours- no food), Mad Mex, Sharp Edge
Last time I was in Pittsburgh I checked out D's and had a great time. Prices were a bit steep on bottles (good selection for western PA though), but their tap list was pretty solid. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1063/?view=beerfly
