Headed to Pittsburgh for an overnighter in a couple weeks. Any suggestions on good bottle shops and or local breweries to visit? Thank you in advance. ..was hoping to grab some Fat Heads. Can I 6ers from the saloon?
Yes, you can get 6 packs and mixed 6 packs at the Saloon. Last couple times I was there they only had 3 different bottles (Headhunter, Sunshine Day Dream and Bumbleberry). Many beers on tap though.
Definately check out Fat Heads on the southside, great food and great stuff on draft and you can pick up a 4 pack of head hunter upstairs or grab a growler of it to go. Across the street from Fatheads is Pipers Pub they usually have a good selection of beer and have the best Cask beer program in Pittsburgh and probably the cleanest tap lines to go with that. Church Brew Works in Bloomfield is a brewery inside a church. The beers arent amazing but are pretty good. The food is even better than the beers. I'd suggest getting the Wild Boar Pizza, it's phenomenal. Roundabout Brewery is located on Butler Street a short drive from downtown. You can get pints there and growler fills. I would highly recommend going to Roundabout as they are by far the best brewery in Pittsburgh right now. If you have time to drive a bit House of 1 Thousand Beers in New kensington has a great bottle selection and gets stuff most other places in Pittsburgh won't get.
Best place to get sixers and bottles are the Giant Eagles that carry beer - Robinson, Shaler, etc. Ho1kB is decent for the harder to find stuff, but you'll pay for it. And some things sit around too long. Church has average beer and horrible food. I have no idea why people keep recommending this place. Fatheads and Pipers pub are both great. If you've never been to a Hofbrauhaus, it's definitely worth a visit.
+1 to KnightRider But not all Giant Eagles that carry beer have good selections. Some have a very limited selection and I would stick to the Robinson & Shaler locations.
Really? Skip the local place in a really cool building but make sure to go to the chain? Church doesn't make mind blowing beer but its a really neat place thats worth a visit.
I'll retract the +1 part about the Church Brew. I haven't been there for a while but it's a nice place with average beer and I'll leave the food part alone, because it's been a few years.
A new up and coming brewery is Hop Farm which is lawrenceville on Butler St & 53rd.. They recently did a special release (500 bottles) of their sour blonde ale for craft beer week a few weeks ago but they have it on tap and it's amazing.. The owner also mentioned they have a BA version in the works! Not sure if it's ready yet but I've loved all their beers they've released..
I'll admit, Church Brew Works is unique. But that's all it's got going for it. The food and beer are mediocre at best. If you consider 4 locations in the US to be a chain, then yes, Hofbrauhaus is a chain. But they've got good beer, good food and, in Pittsburgh, a great location. And I did say if you haven't been to a Hofbrauhaus before...
