So Grist House bought a Cold War era missile command center in Collier Township. Plans are to eventually open a large tap room and move a majority of their production to the new facility. Probably a couple years out from opening though.

Can't wait for all of the inevitable missile/Cold War named beers. Unfortunately, I don't see myself ending up there often unless I plan to JUST to to Grist House, which is pretty much never. It's not much closer to me and there's less around. Either way, good for them.

Who else do you see expanding in near future?

Yeah, it'll be interesting to see how they do with that location. Anyone west of the city is certainly inclined to go more, including myself, but it's not like it's right in Robinson or Bridgeville or right off a highway. It is pretty much down the street from Helicon though, so you can at least hit two while you're out that way.

Besides Cinderlands and Penn which both have second places opening up at some point, the next one I can see moving/expanding is Dancing Gnome. They are totally crunched for space as it is, and I know they want to get more barrel aging going on, which obviously consumes a lot of room. I don't get the sense that BG will expand, although seems like they're (finally) going to get into some canning and not sure if that'll facilitate something. The other thing I can't get my head around is how difficult it apparently is to get a brewery running in the north hills (Ross, Wexford, Franklin Park, McCandless, Warrendale, Cranberry, etc.). You'd have to think someone like Mindful or Spoonwood could do well duplicating their existing spot up that way.

I think all of breweries should get together and buy the Century III mall and open up individual tap rooms. Boom, permanant beer festival. Sure, there's gonna be some asbestos in the beer, maybe some rat feces and ceiling water, but we'll give those spaces to places like Strange Roots.

Plenty of parking available if you don't mind a few moon crater-esqe potholes and faultline like cracks. Lots of room for food trucks.

Mindful, Spoonwood and Cinderlands can have food court space, but please, let Sakkio Japan stay/return. Then we can run Buffalo Wild Wings out of town and replace it with Big Shot Bobs.

All we have to do is evict the five different Lids stores.

So Platform is opening a taproom next to Childrens Hospital this summer.

I haven't had much Platform, mostly sours that my wife picked up.

On behalf of everyone in Cleveland, I’m truly sorry. They’re literally the most unfocused, throw-shit-against-the-wall brewery of all time. Once in a while they brew a decent beer but they’re not even in the top 50 Ohio breweries in terms of quality IMO.

Their fruity pebble collab with Hitchhiker should have been a warning :/

I've liked the majority of Platform beers I've had. Really looking forward to their availability. Torrential Downpour was one of my favorite beers I had in 2018. I thought Never Going Home was excellent as well.

the lawrenceville/liberty/penn corridor is going to be in the running for america's highest per capita density for mediocre craft- church, platform, iron city, arsenal, (eventually?) hell/river town. can't wait.

Sly Fox is moving in too. Brewing facility off of Carson in South Side, taproom on Liberty.

I dont know what the consensus on Sly Fox is here, but I've liked most of what I've had from them, and I love their pilsner. I'm very much okay with this.

Both locations they're moving into are going to be interesting, as certainly neither is (currently) a prime location. I didn't even know what The Highline was before hearing about Sly Fox, so it'll be interesting to see how that plot develops. But it's not the easiest to get there. While the tap room is on Liberty Ave, which sounds good, it's down by the point (in the River Vue Apartments building I believe), where there's a lot less foot traffic. I'm sure the price points were more attractive for them, but I'd be surprised if both were successful, much less one of them.

Sorry to bump up an old thread, but this was the most recent Pittsburgh specific topic I could find in my search. I'm heading back to Pittsburgh for the first time in three years and I'm wondering what's new. My girlfriend went to school there, so I would visit her a lot, and we were all about Fat Heads, Brew Gentlemen and Voodoo...I want to revisit those places but I am wondering what's new on the scene now. Planning on reading through this thread later on when I have time, but figured I'd ask for some quick hits too. Thanks everyone!

BG and Voodoo are still the two best IMO. But, now you can go to Sharpsburg/Millvale area and there is Hitchhiker, Dancing Gnome, and Grist House in that area. All three make solid brews. DG and Grist are especially good for sours.

Doing a brewery hopping, Pirates game, bachelor party this weekend. What breweries have the best outdoor areas? I'm actually having trouble thinking of any beside Grist, Strange Roots, and I just saw where BG opened up something? Has anyone been there? I know there's a few like Voodoo that just throw the doors up . Recommendations?

BG Open Air is a beer garden right behind the brewery...open 2pm-10pm Fri/Sat/Sun. Rotunda also has a pop up beer garden but they don't announce their weekend hours until Fri or early Saturday (https://www.instagram.com/roundaboutpopup/)

Our website can help with this, too. If you head to www.pabrewreview.com/BreweryMap and select Filter > Outdoor Seating or Filter > Open Air, then you can see which breweries have outdoor areas or the garage door open air thing.

Couple notes: you'll need to make an account (it's free) to get the filters. Also will need to double check the individual brewery's page for outdoor seating since some of them are just sidewalk seating outdoor areas, which may not work for a big group. For example, Allegheny City is listed as having outdoor seating but it's just a few sidewalk tables so you'd have to see that on the specific page (https://www.pabrewreview.com/Brewery/AlleghenyCityBrewing)

Hopefully that helps, though the in-person recommendations from everybody in this list will give you the best idea of which places are worth going to.
