Hey all. Visiting pitt. For the weekend and im looking for the best bottle shop around. If anyone has any recommendations thatd be great! Thanks!!
House of 1000 Beers in New Kensington and D's in Edgewood have the best selections. But you might as well just throw your wallet at the clerk when you walk in the door at either location and tell him to take all your money. For decent price coupled with decent selection, Giant Eagles are the way to go.
Thanks dude! Ill check into them.Coming from Cleveland the giant eagles will probably have the same selection at home... :/
Yep. You'll find some nice stuff at the other two I mentioned...just expect to pay for it. There are other shops around that might have diamonds in the rough...but those are the two that will have the best overall selection in my opinion. Maybe others can chime in with more options... EDIT: Make a point to stop at Vintage Estate in Boardman, OH on your way in if you can...that might be the best selection of any nearby.
The House and Dee's are both very good but yes, you will pay through the nose. I was to both in the past week. Here are my orders and totals: House: 1 DC Brau OTWOA 2 Jai Alai 2 VooDoo BBVD 1 Bear Republic Apex $52 Dee's: 1 Nugget Nectar bomber 2 Fat Head's Head Hunter 1 Avery Majaraja 1 Full Pint Rye Rebellion $28
Yea, stop at Vintage Estates, that place is the best around. HO1KB and Dee's are the only places you will go to find beers not sold in Ohio, but like what everyone else has said, you are going to pay at both places. But, pretty much 99% of what is sold at Giant Eagle and Whole Foods, is also available in Ohio.
I'm a big fan of the House, but as others have noted, there are few deals to be had there. Also, if you're planning on picking up any IPA's or DIPA's, be sure to check the best by date if such is indicated on the label. The house has a huge inventory, and as is often the case, that can translate into old or stale stock sometimes. That being said, the selection at the house is outstanding, and they also have a nice bar area with an impressive tap selection as well. When I lived in Morgantown, I'd try to stop by anytime I happened to be up in Pittsburgh (which things being the way they were in Morgantown beer-wise, was at least once or twice a month).
Hey guys! Coming from Columbus in early May with a friend. We would like to stay somewhere close to good bars. We can drive to the breweries if we have to. Anything near downtown? Also how expensive is house of a 1000 beers? I can take a little mark up but don't want to get killed. Thanks!
There are some decent places downtown, but you're biggest concentration of good beer bars in the city itself will either be the Southside (Fatheads/Smoking Joes/Pipers/Carson St. Deli/Library/OTB/Birmingham Bridge Tavern/Hofbrauhaus if thats your thing) or East End/Shadyside/East Liberty/Friendship area (Sharp Edge/Kellys/Mad Mex/Harris Grill/BRGR) There arent any hotels in the middle of the Southside. There's a Holiday Inn Express at the 10th street end and a Springhill Suites and Hyatt House at the Southside Works end. For East End, there is a Courtyard on Centre Ave near the hospital and Springhill Suites in Bakery Sq. Either way, you're probably still going to be walking a bit or using cabs/uber/lyft/bus.
Prices vary; I wouldn't say they're high on everything. When I was last there, they had bottles of HOTD Fred for $7. Bottles of Fred are in the $5 range back in Oregon, so I didn't think that was too bad. On the other hand, the bomber price for FW Double Jack was $15, which pretty much is hiway robbery. When I lived in Baltimore the price was in the $8 or $9 range, so $15 was WAY high I thought, even for the East Coast.
How much is Jai Alai 6 pack at House of 1K Beers if anyone knows? Can you get it anywhere in the city of Pitt?
caliente has it sometimes. i'm also going to the brewery next week and can bring some back for trades if youre interested
I've seen Buddy's tweet pictures of cases of Jai Alai before. No idea of price but I'd imagine it averages quite a bit less per can if you want a whole case.
The House is the only place I've seen in greater Pittsburgh that has Jai Alai and they have it pretty consistently as well. But ya, $3.50 a can. I had a bottle of Double Jack in my hands once...then I saw the price and said fuck that. I got a single 12oz instead for $6. Steep but better oz for oz.
Update to my post above: Buddy's just posted a picture on Facebook of at least 5 cases of Jai Alai and 2 cases of Double Jack (along with Union Jack and it looks like Speedway Stout) about a half hour ago.
