I've tried calling but the number isn't working for some strange reason. Figured I'd ask here.

I'm driving up through Harrisburg next week and I was planning on stopping at Pizza Boy.
    1. Do they fill growlers of everything on tap?
    2. Will they fill outside growlers?

I read a thread from a couple months ago on here with some conflicting information. Some said they only fill medicine bottles, some said they'll fill swing tops. I was hoping for some updated information. I have a seemingly endless supply of each type of growler...

    Thanks,
    Collin

    This is easy.

    1) No they don't. Some of the super rare and/or high end stuff they will not do a growler fill of. Example? No growler fills of KBS or Hopslam when they had it on tap.

    2) Yes they will (or at least they would back when they were jsut Al's of Hampden), assuming they haven't changed their policy since they became a brewpub, instead of just a beer bar. Anyway, I've never seen them turn someone away because of the size or type of their growler.

    Have fun.

They will not currently fill one liter swing tops. I was there last Wednesday and the hose they use to fill growlers does not fit the one swing top.

    Also...
You might be calling the number for their old location.

First and foremost I am not sure why the phone number wouldn't work, I am pretty sure the number hasn't changed since the move.

As far as growlers go, as John said they never fill growlers of the rare stuff but they also sometimes don't fill growlers of some of their own beers as well. Usually that only happens when they are running low and want to make it last a little longer or they just didn't make a whole lot of it.

As stated above they won't fill 1L swing tops because the hose won't fit into them, all other growlers should be no problem. They sell brown 1L medicine jar growlers as well as 2L screw tops, altho those are clear. All of the prices are shown on the board for both sizes, ones with no prices listed are not available for fills.

They also still have all three bottled sours available for in-house only. A bit pricy but well worth it if you are into that sort of thing. Hope you enjoy your visit. Cheers!

I don't know how much I could stress that statement. They are so damn good.

Thanks for the responses. I'll bring some medicine bottles to fill.

I'm traveling with a friend who doesn't like sours, but I'll tackle a 750 of Permasmile if it's available!

You'd be silly not to. Also, look into Intangible if that interests you too. Both are stellar and I think at the time I gave the nod to Intangible being a bit better honestly; but that's just me. Either way you'll enjoy!

Do they have quite a few bottles of both? I'm heading there in a week and a half and my wife loves sours.

You can always share some with some people at the bar...good karma!

Not sure what is still available. I was there in May and they had cases sitting there of each (not including chilled).

You will be fine, they sold a lot of them when they first opened but it has slowed down to a normal pace since then.

I split a bottle of Intangible last weekend and it was one of the best beers I've had in a while. Wonderful Tangerine nose and a great, puckering sourness. Don't pass it up.

Great, thanks everyone! Definitely going to get at least one. Driving there on the way to Pittsburgh and pretty excited to check it out.

Hell yea somebody started a new Pizza Boy thread!!!! BOOM! To help everyone out that is still confused:

    1) They still have a mix a six with a great selection and regular six packs to go
    2) They will fill any 2 liter growler swing top or screw top
    3) They will not fill extremely limited stuff, or nitro taps or blends
    4) They will only fill their 1 liter grenade growlers. The lines don't fit into swing tops, but they will trade you there's for yours.
    5) All 3 sour bottles are still available and continuing to develop in the bottles!

There will quite a few awesome brews hitting the taps soon including a raspberry sour, cherry sour, and a tweaked new batch of royal tannin bomb (blueberry sour)

AFAIK they are not a Brewpub. i.e. they were/are a Brewery (Pizza Boy) a and Pizza Shop with an Eating Place ('E' License) Liquor License (Al's). Technically two businesses. Has this changed?

+1 on the fills...if they can physically manage it, they'll fill your growler.

Aren't the two (the brewery and the restaurant) co-located? It's been a few years now, but Al showed me where the brewery was going to be, and as I recall, it was just under the pub in the back. So I figured that "brewpub" was as apt a description of his new place as any.

Yep, they were and are in the same building, at both the old location and the new. In PA, a Brewpub License is different from a 'E' license, which is what I think Al's has. My guess is they needed the 'E' license to sell everyone else's beers (before and after before starting Pizza Boy). If you're using the term 'brewpub' in a general sense, I agree it's an apt description of the experience.
