... is that just bad? I've done it to save room in the fridge and i think i taste metallic from the cap.

Not bad but not needed. At least in my fridge there isn't much space saved by taking up shelf space with a bottle lying flat where I could put 3 beers if they were standing on their base.

As for a metalic taste, look at the inside of the cap/crown of the next beer you drink. If its like all those I've had for years there is a film of plastic stuff on the inside. So no exposure to the metal. They put the plastic in there to improve the seal and help keep out oxygen.

Storing them on their side for awhile is bad. For a few weeks or couple months won't do anything. At least in my experience.

I haven't run into any issue with this, although I do not store it for a significant length of time.

i don't see why it would be an issue, the reason why it's not recommended with wine is because if the cork gets saturated it can shrink and then oxygen gets into the wine. don't see what the issue is with beer. Don't know if beer is acidic enough to cause a chemical reaction with the metal from the cap, it really should be fine.

Agree with this. Not sure if it would mess with unfiltered beers and leave a weird yeast ring or something.

It doesn't apply to beers. Side storage is not recommended for beers, except by people who see the cork and cage and over-generalize from wine. As someone else mentioned side storage of bottle conditioned beers leads to a problem pouring and trying to leave the sediment behind if its along the sides of the bottle rather than on the bottom. With wine the sediment deposit doesn't need to be on the bottom because it isn't carbonated so you can decant it and leave the sediment behind. Much harder to do with beer.

Wine is supposed to be stored on its side, otherwise the cork will dry out and shrink, letting oxygen in and wine evaporate.

The only issue would be sediment. For a lot of beers, I pour until I see sediment headed out. When placed on it's side, taken out of the fridge and poured, you end up mixing it up and clouding some beers. That's just my two cents eh?

ummm... it is recommended with wine. ever see a wine rack? The cork needs to stay wet so it doesn't dry out and shrink. you have it exactly backwards.

I didn't get that far before I posted. Figured it was safe to respond since his post still said "new".

I think it's personal preference at this point.

I mean, all my bottles are upright, and they seem to do fine. All the bottles in Cantillon's cellar are on their side, and I'm sure they're all fantastic.

I put beer on its side because I like to live on the edge.

If the Cantillon bottles were not stacked on their side to fill up those alcoves they wouldn't have the space to store them all in that small building.
