“The gas in sealed beer bottles is almost exclusively CO2, which does little damage long term to the beer (it is carbonated with the stuff).”

Unfortunately air (oxygen) gets into the bottle during packaging; it is the oxygen in air that is damaging to beer. A metric used to quantify this problem is Total Packaged Oxygen (TPO) and is typically in unit of part per billion (PPB). Since the cap liners are not oxygen impermeable more oxygen will ingress into the bottle with time. This presence of oxygen creates oxidation processes which manifest as beer staling.

    Cheers!

Depends on if it has sediment. It is recommended for bretts, lambics, and other bottle fermented beers to be stored upright.

I store all my crap guest beer on its side in the vegetable drawer at the bottom of the fridge, the good craft stuff (my stuff) stays on the top shelf

That's smart beer organization! Mine is all horizontal in the "cellar". Beers generally go into the fridge 24-48hrs before consumption. I'm almost considering storing lambics on their side for medium term storage.

I've found that when I do this, it spills out of the glass and all over the floor.
