Today I was talking to a friend and explaining how corny kegs are used and how they came about from the soda companies. He asked me why the beer companies haven't switched from the kegs to plastic bags like the soda companies. I didn't have an answer for him, does anyone know why they haven't switched, it would save them a ton of money. Is there a company that even makes a bag to put beer in?

    Cheers

Isnt the syrup in the bag mixed with gas at a later stage. The bags, to my knowledge, are not carbonated.

I believe the bags contain syrup, which is then combined with carbonated water

Exactly as stated above, the bags are not made to hold pressure. Could they? Who knows? Maybe a brave homebrewer will report back - please include photos if it goes badly:slight_smile:

Half Pints brewing up here in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada has started to ship beer to B.C. (1500 km West - that's like 1000 miles) to the bars in some sort of disposable keg now which looks like an decagon and is white (maybe foam?) on the outside.

Found it http://www.keykeg.com/en/ First google hit on "disposable keg"

Those are made to hold pressure... I'd like to get my hands on one (cheaply) to play with. Lots of discussion on probrewer.com.

Wasn't there a Belgian place selling gueuze or lambic in a bag? Thought I saw that a year or two ago. Not sure if it was a still beer or not...

I saw a keg like that of some 2012 Troubador Imperial Stout sitting the cooler of my local TacoMac.. Thought it was pretty odd, wasn't aware that it was disposable.

I have contemplated using a plastic cube for a cask type ale. Would this be something that might work for you:http://www.northernbrewer.com/shop/5-gallon-cubitainer.html

Maybe a stupid question, but are they reusable at all? Their website only sells key kegs, but no replacement bags; am I correct in assuming that the bags are non-replaceable?

Appears they are "one way".. So, I guess not meant to be reused, as it probably appears you need an adapter to fill them.

IIRC the lambic contained is still.

Beer concentrate is the wave of the future, man. Hopped DME+ carbonated water.

Edit: Oh man, I can see it now. The best part of fountain drinks is when the water runs at a low ratio and you get a really syrupy drink. Can you imagine how Schlammered you'd get if you had this happen with beer?

They have the outer cardboard to protect the plastic ball inside; the foil bag with the beer in it goes into the plastic ball. Everything except the foil bag is reusable. I like them, much lighter and easier to stack which is very helpful in a small bar!

I was thinking about these here: http://plastickegs.com/ They claim to be reusable, even able to be steam cleaned.

I thought of plastic kegs as well. I don't see them being widely adopted anytime soon (there are reports of them exploding while cleaning, including an incident that killed a worker last year.)

When I saw the thread title I immediately thought of this. Anyone know how they serve this? Cut a corner off or something?
