I think they sell plastic and cans rather than glass at concerts and sporting events to avoid:
    - broken glass on the ground
    - fights with bottles
    - people throwing bottles

I love going to the BWCA and even hauled in a full Nalgene growler from Fitger's Brewery once. I think the rule has a number of reasons. First the area was established in the 60's. The principle is to leave no trace, so the ban is intended to be a ban on single use packaging that people might be too tempted to deep six into the bottom of a lake or ditch in the back of a campsite. In the 60's this is a no brainer - ban glass and cans. At that time I assume plastic was more for reusable purposes so it was allowed. Problem is that it's difficult to come up with a rule that bans single-use plastics like a coke bottle and allows reusable plastics like a nalgene bottle or ziplocks, so the rule has simply remained no cans or glass.

Fitger's no longer sells Nalgenes (sadly; apparently their minimum order from the producer was in the thousands so they decided it wasn't cost-effective anymore), but they do now sell aluminum or stainless growlers that I'm pretty sure are BWCA-friendly.

Luckily they still fill their old Nalgenes. It's the best growler I've ever had for anything outdoorsy. Super lightweight and once the beer is gone, it can be reused for lugging around potable water. You just have to be careful to avoid light.

Edit: Never mind, they've replaced the Nalgenes with these: https://fitgersbrewhouse.securestorepayments.com/shop/amber-plastic-growler/

If you need a tiebreaker, I'll help. Its gross. I wince and shiver when I think back to when I sampled all those East European and Russian beers in the plastic bottles. 2 liters of Obolon anyone?

Interesting and probably correct, an old rule that made sense then, but now creates more pollution than it reduces. Hopefully someone in control of this place will wake up.

Aluminum and glass are both non biodegradable plastic at least can be though I suspect the best option is cans because they are light when emptied you can crush them and put them in a small bag so that you can recycle them later no danger of broken glass or plastic/glass bottles that will take up exceptionally more room when empty. 24 crushed cans in a small plastic bag vs. 24 bottles in a garbage bag? no matter what the choice it involves relying on people to be responsible for their trash.

This is probably the big reason to not allow glass or aluminum stuff. If you're bringing a pot, or a tent, or a sleeping bag, chances are it's coming back with you, but I've got a huge feeling (I think that my cynic is showing here) that most people (or at least enough to ruin it for everybody else) that bring stuff like cans and bottles of beer aren't thinking about appreciating nature, taking only pictures, and leaving only footprints. Likewise, they're probably not going to clean up their mess, and the park managers probably don't want to either. The solution? Just don't bring this stuff to begin with.

Edit: It's a fishing trip, probably a similar deal though.
