I haven't got too into aging beers, but every once in awhile I'll stow away a few barleywines or imperial stouts for a couple years. Tonight I had the pleasure of cracking open a Bell's Third Coast from 2010... Wow - pretty sublime stuff. Anyway - I was wondering if anyone else was really surprised by a brew with some age on it. It'd be cool to hear some other stories.

PS - Two year old Stone IRS is pretty good, too... But Third Coast takes the cake for me.

I have had very pleasing results with Great Divide hibernation. It is wonderful fresh, and morphs into very tasty (but different) beer after a few years. I wasn't sure what would happen to this beer because it already has some of the characteristics of aged beer in its flavor when released. I thought it might be "peaked" at release and just go downhill (the brewers do specifically age it before release and I think they know what they are doing), but to my surprise it seems to have a long road of good flavor ahead of it after it is released to the public.

I was pleasantly surprised by a 2006 Sierra Nevada Celebration last night.

Bell's has two of the more cellarable beers I know of in Expedition and Third Coast. The 12 oz format makes it easy to buy many of them, they age really well, and they're inexpensive enough to get many of them.
