There is an annoying unresolved issue in the craft beer community. Beers are sold in 12oz bottles - lagers, IPAs, double IPAs, porters, stouts, imperial stouts, high ABV & low ABV. However, when I go to a brewery or restaurant, my 12oz double IPA or imperial stout gets reduced to 10oz or 8oz or whatever. Yes, I understand, the point is that the ABV is supposed to match the volume, but I don't have to follow that when I buy bottles for home, parties, with friends. etc. So, we have an inconsistency. And I'm really bummed out when I get a "little" beer that cost more than my 12oz from the store. How about, give me a 12oz for any/all beers, then TRUST me to regular my own drinking. I'm a grown-up, not a child. I can handle it. I don't like 2 different standards.

The taprooms around here serve smaller doses at higher prices when a beer is over 10% ABV. While I do feel a bit ripped off, I do appreciate a smaller dose of high-test when I need to drive. Often when I stop for a beer, it's one beer and I'm on my way. While I am a big guy (6'4" and 250+) and one 12oz high-ABV beer probably would not make me legally drunk, it would make me feel uncomfortably close.

What annoys me more is that taprooms want to charge twice as much for high-ABV and though I know there needs to be more fermentables in such a beer, I suspect they're taking the opportunity to jack the prices more than they need to.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind seeing the 12oz pour become the standard for every style. 12oz cans/bottles are perfect for home, why not out too?

Do you want a 12oz pour of a 14% BA stout and have to pay $12-$15 for it? If the place is serving a 16oz pint of a 5% pale ale or Gose for $6 I would prefer an 8oz pour of their BA stout for $8. Brewers just try to find the sweet spot for sales based on style and price.

I personally see this all of the time. I look at the menu and it lists the beer and a price, but then when I order it it's not served in a "pint" glass it's served in a smaller glass.

Founders sells All-Day IPA in 15 packs for $16 and also 4 packs of Better Half and Backwoods. Its same pricing in stores as in taprooms.

This has been going on for years but I have measured beer at a certain place near me and their "pints" are pints to the rim which means that with foam you're getting 14 oz. if you're lucky. Their half pours into snifters for anything over 8% are 8 oz. at best but they'll tell you they're either 10 or 12 oz. depending on the bartender. LIES!!! ALL LIES!!! That pisses me off! Don't call it a "pint" if it's not a pint! And don't call it any amount if you can't back that up. I'm tired of getting ripped off on 'expensive' beers. I'll pay the price if it's a barrel-aged so-and-so or whatever else, but don't screw me over in the end by shorting me on volume. Expensive beers at least deserve a proper measure.

You've been a BA since 2015 and you're somehow surprised that beer costs more at a bar than at a store? Is this the first bar you've been to?

I definitely wouldn't want to deal with your astounding logic as a beertender. Just. No.

But when I expect that high abv beer to be served in a smaller vessel and I get a 16 ounce pour....oh my!

In my own limited experience, I have seen the prices at stores be a tad cheaper than at the breweries. In general.

You can drink as much as you want at home. You can be responsible or irresponsible with your consumption....it’s on you.

At a bar/restaurant, they are responsible for you. So reducing the size of high ABV beers is practical.

Ah, I was talking independent taprooms. Granted that a brewery taproom should be as cheap or cheaper than in the store.

Assuming that they brewery/bar puts the size on the menu, which the vast majority do... this seems like a non issue to me. I guess if you order a beer assuming you're getting a pint and you get a snifter... but even then, since when is 12 oz the standard? If anything out at a bar and brewery, pint - 16 oz is the standard, again unless listed otherwise.

Surly's taproom priced every beer - tax included - at a flat $5* and varied the size by ABV. That made the service at the cash only bar on the dining deck super fast - throw a fiver down and drop a dollar in the tip jar and you were done.
