I see where you're coming from, for example when people compare NN to heady or something, but there are certain beers that have such similar taste profiles that it's interesting to see how different palettes interpret them.

I don't think it's unreasonable to want to people to attempt a search to see if their topic has been discussed before.

Also, the issue of X vs Y threads is that they really don't add any actual information, we already know which BA as a whole prefers, it's the one that's rated higher. And there's not much interaction in those threads besides yelling "YES HUH" "NUH UH". I don't see the point.

But, of course, I just don't read them. That said, why limit discussion to just beer? We could talk about anything, if you don't like the thread just don't read it. The line has to be drawn somewhere.

My time is INCREDIBLY precious (which is why I spend so much of it on BA), so I need every click that I make on this site to be guaranteed "worth it." 98% of the time, versus threads are silly, and just contain a bunch of people not-listening to anyone else in the thread. Aint nobody got time for that. (vote yogibeer for overlord 2013)

There's nothing wrong with the threads - only the replies

Seriously, I don't see the harm in a versus thread, or an "if you liked X, what else would you recommend" kind of threads. This site is all about discovering new beers and expanding your knowledge of the craft beer world. Some people have been around here for many, many years and feel that these threads have absolutely nothing to offer them. Fine. Ignore them. But some people are new, have tried very few beers, and have lots to gain by discussing the topic with more experienced consumers.

If your time is so precious, then why take the time to create a thread about the stupidity of versus threads? When you could just not click on them?

Somehow that's always the winning statement, irregardless of topic. I concede.

I really wish people would search before they start a new thread... particularly in the regional forums where people want trip advice. It seems like theres at least one or two new threads a week these days in the New England forum with people trying to plan a VT trip to Hill Farmstead and The Alchemist. I click them and read them if I think I may have answers to contribute but it's always questions that have been asked a thousand times before.

When you see a threads with "vs" in the name just don't open them. I sort of like them. I could care less if the beers aren't that similar. As long as they are both beers, having a discusion about what you like/dislike about each one, and which one you like better can be fun.

I'm not a math genius and certainly not one to give out advice very often so take this as you wish but if 98% of the VERSUS threads are silly when you click on them, and your time is incredibly precious and you need to make every click count....well then my advice is simply don't click on VERSUS threads. Your odds of not wasting YOUR time would greatly improve if I'm doing the math right. Others can still click if they are interested but if you don't then I think we may have solved your problem. Sure you're going to miss out on the 2% that aren't silly but you'd miss out on them anyhow with an outright ban so nothing lost there either I guess....just my thoughts

I like versus threads, especially with beers that are vastly different. More interesting conversations develop when you have different styles going up against one another. This is a website devoted to beer, as such users are inevitably going to compare one beer to another. Trying to police it seems silly.

Also, if you don't like the threads, don't open them. Seems simple enough.

Hey, I have a whole lot of nothingness to contribute to this site and all of you must know how much better it is than your nothingness.

I agree. It's about your preference and learning about what people like and don't. If they are exactly the same then there is no vs.

It's about fun, and learning. Too many people take things too seriously and personal.
