On Thanksgiving day, I threw a bunch of stuff together quick and made a 1 gallon batch.
I Steeped 1 oz of caramel 40 for about 15 minutes
1 LB of plain amber dme
    .2 oz of cascade hops
    1 whirlfloc tablet
I boiled it all about 30 minutes, cooled it to 80 and then pitched about 1/5 sachet of safeale us-05
I let it primary for a week, moved it to secondary because it just looked down right nasty, with a huge krausen layer, needless to say I didn't have high hopes for this one. I bottled it, it say for 20 days and I had one last night and it was fantastic! Great flavor, a nice lighter amber color, clear as day and a nice light hint of cascade hops, just enough, since they are so potent.

Anyone else ever have a happy accident like this? Luckily I take great notes and I will be scaling up this batch to 5 gallons soon.

Congrats. It's always nice when caution is completely thrown to the wind, and you can enjoy the win.

When it comes right down to it, beer can be incredibly simple to make. All you need is a ballpark recipe - ingredients in sane proportions (an oz of dme and a lb of caramel 40 wouldn't work, for example). Probably the single most critical factor is sanitation. Frankly, it's not a surprise that this turned out well.

According to lore...Stone Arrogant Bastard was a happy/hoppy accident....

I'm curious to know why, considering what a simple malt and hop profile it has. I'll have to read up on it.

No I wasn't referring to the OP's beer. I wrote my last post from my phone which doesn't allow me to quote the post about Stone AB by Suavo. Would have prevented the confusion if I was able to.

I meant I wonder how Stone Arrogant Bastard could have been a "happy accident" considering it's pretty much a smash beer. Perhaps they threw in the wrong kind of hop or the wrong kind of malt by mistake? Perhaps they were out of the type of malt / hop they intended to use and rolled the dice on a substitute?
