Visiting Portland and Bend again this summer. Was unable to find any Pliny bottles last time in town. Found it on tap. Anyone know how common bottles are in town?

Oregon doesn't get bottles anymore, just on draft.

People still care about Pliny? Drink all the Barley Browns and Boneyard instead.

If he's looking for bottles, though, India Golden Ale, Yellow Wolf, or Green Mammoth (or your favorite bottled OR DIPA) might be better recommendations.

On second thought, crowlers of Boneyard and Barley Browns probably work better: 32oz for only a buck or two above that theoretical 500ml Pliny.

Are there threads in the Southeast forum asking where to get HT in Atlanta?

Note to self: Remember to ask Georgia locals where to find Vermont beer the next time I'm visiting Atlanta.

Edit: Looks like @beertunes got the same brainwave, at pretty much the same time.

I would second this. Regardless of what folks think about Pliny (good, bad, indifferent), the reality is that bottles aren't distributed in Oregon any more, so the OP isn't going to find it in any local stores. If the OP wants to bring back some IPA's/DIPA's that typify some of the best of what Oregon has to offer, then I would second the recommendation from sharpski.

I'm actually going to be at Russian River next week. I was looking to surprise my friend in Portland with a few bottles as a kind gesture. Sorry for wasting your time.

No need to apologize. It's just a question we hear so often, and we honestly wonder why folks visit one area, but seek objects from another area. We hope you get some Pliny for your friend, and enjoy your visit.

while I get the sentiment behind this, it's kind of dickish and doesn't really go to the Advocacy we're supposedly here for. If I was going to somewhere in a distro of something I was looking for, I might ask if it's around, even if it's not "local".

I realize Pliny is a sore subject, but c'mon.

No wonder Pliny wasn't available last few times I checked at Belmont Station

Sounds like a very kind gesture. I'm sure it will be appreciated.

I'm a big fan of the IPA's from Boneyard and Barley Brown, but I always enjoy the occasional bottle of Pliny whenever I can get it. I'm sure your friend will feel the same way.

Urgh. In my mind, my quip sounded more funny than dickish, but looking at it now I don't know how the hell I could think that. My apologies, and I hope you enjoy your visit.

Now I'm confused. You're going to be at the source for Pliny next week, but are wondering where to get your friend in Portland some Pliny (in Portland)? I say get some for him/her at Russian River next week and bring those. Or did you mean you're visiting your friend in Portland before you go to RR? If you're looking to do something special for your friend, bring some stuff from GA distro that we can't get locally. I don't know your friend, but if it were me, Westbrook, Terrapin, etc. would be more special than a beer I can get (on draft) locally.

I have some GA beers to share. Going to RR first. I didn't want to buy Pliny if it makes a regular appearance in Portland. Thanks to everyone that gave other recommendations. I will seek out those on my trip.

When I travelled to NY for work on a regular basis, I'd always pick up beers to bring home from anywhere from Maine to Michigan. Granted NYC isn't, no matter what some publications say, the beer mecca that Portland is; but given the massive distribution dividing line that is the Rocky Mountains, I won't fault someone for looking for a beer that they can't get in their home state.

That's kind of a d*** comment to make (and i'd expect no less from some insulated, territorial, snotnose, Portlandia hipster-joke Oregonian ), as fresh Heady/Hill Farmstead/Lawson's has never been distributed outside Vermont, whereas fresh Pliny was distributed in bottles in Oregon for years.

Edit: Didn't see your subsequent apology...my apology for insulting the hipster Portlandians in the crowd.

If people want Pliny so bad, why come to the PNW? Go to Denver, Philly, or even Cali. Those are the places where the stuff is distributed. OR gets very little, and RR doesn't come to WA at all. If you look through a few pages of this forum, you'll see how often this question gets asked. Maybe then you'll see why we get tired of answering the question, and sometimes answer in a less than Oprah-approved manner. Feelings, sometimes they get hurt.

But they once did distribute bottle to both Oregon and Washington, right? I live in VA. I haven't been to the PNW for five years (but am going this summer). How am I supposed to know that Russian River isn't distributed like it used to be UNLESS I ASK?

I was going to ask about Russian River SOUR bottles, but now I'm afraid some local snot will get his feelings hurt and react by pissing all over me.

The same dumbass questions get asked repeatedly on the Mid-Atlantic forum as well (sometime even by people from the PNW ). Fortunately, there's some nice folks (I'm not one of them, lol) who politely answer the same questions over and over without pissing on the person doing the asking, or getting their feelings hurt because they were asked a dumb question.
