A short i in Latin is pronounced like our short i, as in knit.
A long i in Latin is pronounced like our long e, like ski.
Our long i, as in mine, is their ai and ae dipthongs. (hence Gaius is pronounced guy-us).

The problem that comes up is that Latin changed significantly in the Middle Ages, including many changes in vowel pronunciation. For instance, alumni, the plural of alumnus, is classically pronounced a-lum-knee. The way we pronounce it today is actually how classically you would pronounce alumnae, the feminine plural (i.e. a group of more than one alumna in which all members were female).

Oh, ok, now it makes sense, so you actually didn't write in phonetically, but as in latin. Alright. And now to crown the last 15 minutes of this debate and finally clarify everything, here's what I did: http://grze.net/temp/plinius.m4a
That is my pronunciation  Let me know what you think.

spot on. From the start I could have used IPA (not that IPA guys!), but it probably would have confused people more.

Now I want to drink the most latin-sounding beer I have in my cellar tonight. Veritas anyone? Immelmann could do it, but that's more German.

I don't understand the hate myself. What's wrong with wanting to know how something is pronounced?

Admission: I studied English in college, so prolonged debates over obscure dictional or grammatical concerns aren't exactly outside my wheelhouse

Lazy thread may well be lazy. Meanwhile, however, many of us (myself included, don't get me wrong) are spending 30-plus dollars on bottles of beer largely based on name recognition, relative difficulty to acquire, or both; debating the merits of X bottle versus Y bottle in minute detail; and damning any brewery that dare make a misstep (hello Bruery!).

God forbid, though, that anyone discuss the likes of Pliny

why would you post multiple times in a thread that you don't deem discussion worthy? i guess because you are such a non-conformist?
