I plan on combining my two favorite beers, Pliny the Elder and Arrogant Bastard into Pliny the Bastard.

The recipe below is the base for Pliny (More Beer), with CaraAroma subbed for C40, bittering by Chinook, and dry hopped with Chinook, Columbus, and Centennial. SRM will be a bit darker from the CaraAroma. The beer fermented with WLP001 (Pliny) instead of WLP007 (Bastard).

Do you think 147 IBUs of Chinook will be overpowering? The Pliny recipe with Magnum, Simcoe, Columbus, and Centennial is 153 IBU (per Beersmith).

The resulting beer should be dry, like Pliny, but bursting with Chinook goodness.

    Looking for feedback.

For me yes . . . but I'm not a big AB fan.

I do suggest you not get too hung up on IBU numbers, each recipe calculator handles this differently and the majority seem to not take into account the lack of alpha acid absorption at the higher levels. What Beersmith calls 153 for Pliny compares to 90 - 95 by Russian River. This is discussed in more detail in the current "DIPA recipe thread". Also, this type recipe begs for hop extract for the initial bittering addition.

Using the same amount of hops, this is what I would suggest.

    1oz at 60
    2oz at 15
    2oz at 5
    2oz at 0

Chinook is a great hop...but not that great : )...a little diversity goes a long way, IMHO...even if throwing in a couple of "token" hops for the dry hop.

The 90 for Pliny is from lab analysis not calculation. Mitch Steele has it at 65 in his IPA book, and someone one this boardbacks that up.

Why not brew both clones and mix. Then you can set the amount you want of both more Pliny or more bastard and you'll have both to drink separately.
