I absolutely adore Pliny the Elder. Since I was introduced to this fine brew, I found that no other beer comes close in comparison. I've tried some of the best DIPAs--Heady, Enjoy by, etc., but nothing has come close to the mark. I am so tired of never being able to find Pliny.

Is there anything out there that really gives Pliny a run? I don't think Heady came very close, but I also had a can shipped to CA, so age likely played a factor there. I also know finding Heady in CA makes finding Pliny seem trivial. Enjoy by is pretty amazing, but it seasonal and probably more difficult to find than Pliny.

Is there a magical beer that is easier to find and can supplement my Pliny love? Or is the never ending, five+ liquor store search and two hour drive just my new reality. Please advise.

BTW, if you're gonna say Pliny sucks or something along those lines, please don't bother responding. We clearly have different preferences.

I am the original IPAchris! Try to grab some Lagunitas Sucks while you can. If you can ever get ahold of Pliny the Younger...its even better!

can you get Victory by you? if so, I bet 1 or both of their new DIPAs will satisfy your hops needs (Dirt Wolf and Hop Ranch)

Hopslam is a good place to start looking.

The guy is complaining about how hard it is to get PtE and you tell him to go get Younger.... that's just cruel :grinning:

What entails "trying some of the best?" Can you help us eliminate all the usual suspects by being more specific with what you've already had?

These aren't all "doubles" but I love Bell's Two Hearted Ale and Hopslam. I really wish I could hate Sculpin - but actually it's quite nice. Three Floyds can't hardly go wrong with hops. Great Divide's Hercules isn't especially sophisticated, but it's still one of my favorite DIPAs. And yeah, Maharajah's good.

San Jose -- fortunately I'm only about two hours from RR, so I make the trip as often as the wife allows.

Port Mongo might have what you're looking for- it's got as much piny-ness as fruit, very well made. I could see it being a reasonable substitute for when Pliny isn't available.

Yup, get some Sucks. You say you like Pliny better than Heady, that just seems... weird.

You're closer to Sante Adairius than me, go try 831. Also, the Cellarmaker in SF is making some damn fine Pale Ales. Lastly, Faction has been releasing good hoppy beers.

I've been using BA's top 250 as a mark. I tried Heady, which was really close to Elder, but it wasn't as good--then again, I don't know how old the can was. I really like Enjoy By. I didn't enjoy Sculpin--I think it was too citrusy for my liking. I've tried Firestone--pretty good. Racer X, Cafe Racer.

The beer that has come closest to that Pliny flavor is this brew called Ale of the Imp from Hermitage Brewing. I was kind of surprised how poor the reviews are for it. Makes me wonder if the batches are inconsistent or something.

    Thanks for the comment.

I was lucky enough to get three cans of HT, but finding HT in California is near impossible. HT was great and I would certainly treat is a Pliny supplement. I do hope to make a trip to the brewery one day.
