Heady doesn't need a date. It sells out every week

Love me some Double Jack. I didn't see that mentioned specifically, but saw you mention Firestone. I'm not saying it's better (or worse), but it's a damn good DIPA. Others that I enjoy but make no claim to their rank (not sure how hard these are to get in CA, but I tried to omit ones I know you can't easily get): Sculpin, Caldera IPA, Bells Two Hearted, 21st Amendment Brew Free Or Die, Ninkasi Total Domination, Lots of good Green Flash stuff, Alpine Duet (one of my favorites), Coronado makes some good stuff too.

Columbus Brewing Bodhi. You'll have to get a growler shipped to you though, as it's not bottled... yet.

I love how something as subjective as personal taste is considered wrong or uunsophisticated...

Anywho... myrcenary is probably the best dipa coming out of colorado these days, and I would take it over pliny any day. Double jack is up there as well. I don't agree that pliny is better than heady, but I do agree that a lot of breweries can't come close to that mark, including stone, sierra nevada, and a slew of others.

Did they rename Alchemy Hour, to Chillwave? Is it the same beer? Alchemy Hour was fantastic!

I've had Pliny that was 2 weeks old and 4 weeks old, and I've had Heady fresh, 2 weeks old, and 4 weeks old. I'd take Heady over Pliny any day.

But, personally, I'd take Hill Farmstead DIPA's over both (Abner, Double Galaxy, Double Citra). Granted I've had them all out of a growler within a couple days of being poured, but they're just perfect aroma, mouthfeel, etc.

I'd put permanent funeral up there with PtE and hopslam too. If I had to choose between the three I'd go Pliny but all are world class imo
edit: just seen chillwave too or alchemy hour, definitely recommend that one too (thought it was even better than the slam last year)

Agree 100% with the Alpine suggestion. Duet and Pure Hoppiness are the only two I have had and both are amazing.

Forget those Avery and Founders suggestions. They are great beers but a totally different style of IPA than Pliny's purist West Coast style. If you want a similar elixir, go up to the Alpine Brewing Co. in Alpine, CA (outside of San Diego) and get yourself some of their IPAs and DIPAs!! They are light bodied, hoppy as hell, clean, and delightful. A few bottles make their way onto store shelves around the state, but if you can get to the brewery you'll have an incredible selection to choose from.

Not always that easy to find (I'm in San Diego!!), and not always sufficiently carbonated. They're good, but keep this in mind.

Keeping up the trend of suggesting beers you won't be able to easily obtain:

    Abner.

Seriously worth trading for, assuming you can get it fresh.

If you're looking for a great ipa that's readily available than I think Green Flash West Coast IPA is hard to beat. IMO there are plenty of beers better than Pliny but they're hard to get. The Headys and Abrassives of the world are much different beers if you ask me so if you like Plinys balance something like Psuedosue or Hoponious Union might be up your alley. Again tougher to get though.
