At a tasting a few months back, there was both Pliny The Elder and Thrillseeker from Beachwood (both very fresh) sampled. I think both have very similar hop profiles, but I actually liked Thrillseeker more than Pliny. So...if you can find any Thrillseeker, get that!

Also, my #1 suggestion would be to trade for Abrasive. My favorite DIPA...over both Heady and Pliny.

    Chris,
New released Noble Ale Works Big Whig and Citra Showers are great IPAs. Also come Feb., keep an eye out for Knuckle Sandwich from Bootlegger's Brewery.

    Cheers!

With ya there man... Pliny is very close but just doesn't have quite as big of a flavor explosion as Heady. Maybe the one he had was more than a week old though! :grimacing:

If you are looking for something along the same lines as Pliny then try to get your hands on a fresh Ninja vs Unicorn from Pipeworks Brewing.
If you want to go the more economical route when your Pliny stockpile gets low try Lags HopStoopid

Since you are in California, I would highly recommend that you branch out and acquire some Alpine Duet or Nelson and if you want your mind blown then take a venture to Societe' and sample The Pupil

+1 Permanent Funeral. The only beer I've ever had to edge out Pliny. Though its a close 2nd.

Lagunitas Sucks is astonishingly good for a DIPA that can be had in most Cali supermarkets for about $10 a sixer. It ain't Pliny, but it'll certainly due while you're waiting for the next batch from RR.

I'll put in another vote for Gandhi Bot and Abrasive. Two of my favorite DIPA's.

The guy prefers Pliny than Heady. What's weird about that? Heady is great but not with others.

Get your hands on some of the Risings (Kiwi, Mass) by Jack's Abby. You will not be disappointed.

I agree, but considering HF never bottles those IPA's (at least that I've seen when I've been there) the chances of him getting to try any, short of coming up to Greensboro with a growler or 3, is just about 0%. If he has a contact in VT that's able to send him HT he should have him send some Lawson's Double Sunshine his way. That's right up there with the best DIPA's that HF makes.

I've had 3 month old Heady and it's still better than 97% of everything else.

To the OP my recommendations would be:

Abner - best beer I've ever had
    Abrasive - Phenomenal
    Gandhi Bot - see above
