Probably too late to get a reply, but I have gallons of trub after the boil. What's the trick? Wait a long time (like until tomorrow morning??) until it settles? Just try to rack the whole mess into the fermenter and deal with it later?

I was really looking forward to this batch, and hate to trash it with a wrong decision here. Leaning toward letting it sit over night (it's 5 til 12, work tomorrow) and racking it in the morning. After sitting for about 39 minutes there is about 3 gallons of trub-free wort out of a total volume of 6 gallons.

And then there's the dry hopping.

Any advice would be MOST appreciated.

By the way, the batch is Pliny the Elder. 8.75 oz of hops in so far. As it stands now, it's well beyond 50% more trub loss than I'd expect, but maybe that's being tired and alarmed doing the talking.

I'm putting 5 gallons of whatever I can into the fermenter. I'll deal with the consequences later.

Did you try to at least use some cheese cloth? That would of helped some.

I had a funnel with a screen. I got 4 gallons into the fermenter. Not much trub. Looks pretty good...just a gallon short of the goal.

for future hoppy beers.....just make a larger batch. i usually scale up to a 7 gal batch for an ipa and even then i might only get 4-4.5 gal of what i consider "clear" wort into the carboy. you can also try hop extract for the bittering addition to reduce the hop matter in the kettle. if you add ALL the trub to your fermenter to get to a certain gal mark your not really getting more beer....just more junk into the fermenter that will eventually fall out of suspension.

Some time after I can see straight I'll go back through my records and see what I would have expected if I would have estimated the trub loss myself. What I was getting lined up perfectly with brewcipher's calculations perfectly up to then.

The hop extract is an interesting idea. Thanks!!

    Cheers
